Forums - Gaming - 720p != 1080p

Firstly maybe I have weird eyes but to be honest my ability to distinguish between the jaggie and smooth lines disappeared at about the same distance that I could no longer distinguish the crosses.  I'd need to see a few more examples of this supposed phenomena on some other people besides myself before I am convinced of this point.  Furthermore I can recall seeing jaggies in a 720p game, not so much in 720p movies, do people really think it is a factor is determining differences in image quality?

Sorry if I missed this but I didn't see anyone mentioning viewing distance, the other part of the equation.  The important point is that there is not a discrete distance for a certain TV size where suddenly 1080p is revealed to you in all it's glory, rather it is a continuum.  Perhaps aliasing IS the most first and most noticeable difference in IQ accounting for the "starts to become noticeable" regions on the graph but the point remains there are TV sizes and viewing distances where, due to limitations of the human eye (not necessarily just discrete resolution) we aren't going to be able to tell the difference between the various TV resolutions.

I have more to say on this topic but will leave it for another time.

Nice article, proves good poins, heck it actually made sence, the jaged lines and the normal lines

Wow, what a waste of time. It doesn't matter if a game is 1080p or 720p, you will see jaggies if there are jaggies. Infact, standard TV sets display much LESS jaggies because of the natural blending that occurs. If the image is properly aliased, you cannot tell the difference between 1080p and 720, the only time you can tell is when there is NO anti aliasing. You showed dotted and straight lined crossed..you showed jagged and anti aliased lines........all you proved was anti-aliasing works

I have a 21 inch 1080p monitor and I watch it from 3-5 feet away and you can't tell on TV. You can tell on non aliased games but most have some level of it. Also, 1080p doesn't provide any benefit over 720p when showing 720p footage which is most games. If anything, 720p on a 1080p screen reduced image quality

This just isn't correct.  Smoothing out the edges surely improves image quality but it doesn't change the fact that there is nearly twice the amount of visual information in a 1080p image, at some point that IS going to matter.

Edit: you bring the topic of source media into your following post which is important but for the sake of trying to say which is better or if there is a difference we should first focus on source media which is capable of showing the difference. i.e. not TV

720p is just half HD.
But people calling it HD anyways to help sales TV and players.

720 is poor mans HD as my friend puts it.

not really, there is no majorl benefit of 1080p for TVs below 32" so if you want to save yourself some cash when buying TVs below that size get a 720p till prices drop. Or wait till UHD and SUHD TVs come to market.

I picked up a 22" inch 1080p with a free HDMI cable from sam's club more than a year ago and it was a great deal compared to other tv's that were only 720p.

You can't tell the difference between 1080p unless the tv is 42" or above. What you are experiencing is the difference in tv quality or you are fooling yourself into thinking its better because you want it to be.

This is the reason why I gave up on most console gaming. Too many jaggies, too low resolution and too low frame-rate. My HTPC and my desktop PC both run games at stable frame-rates with AA enabled and the only time I stoop to using a console again is the odd console game which doesn't come on PC and is good enough to slum for a while.

Tease.
