the ps3 sw sales are almost the same as the wii despite half the install base. piracy must be a key piece of this equation. sony appears to controlling the ps3 so far. half the people i know that have a wii don't pay for games

Exactly, piracy helps to sell in the first years, but then, when you have lo live with software, it's a bad thing.

Nintendo sells their software anyway, but it's mostly because they bundle it with hardware and people know the quality and buy it. But if they want more third party support they must prevent piracy, also because handhelds don't need piracy to sell well, especially the Nintendo ones which always sell at record levels. So Nintendo keep on fighting!

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Yeah, is about time for nintendo to do something about piracy,,, But In the other hand is also time for them to do something about the overprices in other places, like Costa Rica (where I live), the prices here are not for anybody, people are not buying games not because they do not want to but because they can not afford the prices... A wii cost around $400usd, and any game (dont dream with price cuts, that just doesnt happen) any wii game $80usd...

Nintendo should do the same thing with the next Nintendo video game console as well like the gamecube and there small disks

Mr.Iwata is a brillant man,so Im +++

It's the number one reason why the 3DS is probably going to launch so soon. Nintendo hade been complaining about the DS software sales and BAM there was the 3DS announcement.

I am willing to place a ban bet here that if 3DS were to release in Japan a few months first. It will be fully hacked before reaching US shore.

Of course it's cool to talk about the future console, but Nintendo is not taking a proactive rule in this. What about the Wii and DS? Why not have proactive firmware updates to deter CURRENT piracy issue?

as the current owner of both DS and Wii, I see too often that people around me are pirating and doing so openly and easily

The trouble is that there are a lot of people who are NEVER online which is around around 50% of the DS or Wii users, according to some studies (even about 30% of the 360 and PS3 owners have not connected their consoles to internet). And even for those who doesn't have current firmware all games should work so it is difficult to force firmware updates. The only way to provide proactive firmware updates would be to deliver them with games. Which would mean mean old games would be easy to pirate so even that would not stop pirating.

Hopefully they will find a way like in the PS3 that piracy is almost impossible. I wonder how a world would be without piracy.

If Sony can do it why not Nintendo and Microsoft if we are lucky and they put as much effort in it as Sony we wont have any piracy next gen. It is possible to win against the hackers. I cant see a reason that atleast the next 3 homeconsoles will be piracy proof. Companies need time to react and I have a feeling that piracy on closed platforms will be gone next gen (hopefully).

if piracy is impossbile then we will see sold Software increasing after a while its not enough that just PS3 is piracy proof all have to be unhackable. Or atleast to an extent where most people wouldnt do it anymore.

Ah... so you'll actually be able to easily switch off the 3D effect? That's interesting, and further backs up my belief that the system will be far more than just an upgraded DS with 3D capabilities. 'Cos if it was, and you'd turn off the 3D thing, you'd be left with something similar to the current DS, probably. And Nintendo wouldn't release something if it wasn't a serious step forward from the product that preceded it.

I'm fearing the very same thing my friend...

good for them, however pirates will find a way.
one of the thimg is that the 3ds will no longer be made as an emulator for obious reasons
