I know that game is going to be good, but I'm afraid of the "lack of innovation" thing. I want to be wow'd at it, but I don't think I am. I haven't been following any news on it though so that might help.

Why do you need innovation to be wowed, isn't amazing quality enough, sometimes?

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

Another great score, was kinda expecting the "lack of impact" type comments though, so no surprises, honestly I'd be more surprised if they didn't bring up that its not really innovating on the original.

pretty much innovates on the original, about 90% of SMG2 is newer compared to first one, new levels, power-ups, characters ect.

i really hope i don't get flamed for this, im getting a wii for the two galaxy games so im not hating. But if you put footage from both games side by side and show them to a casual mario player, they wont be able to tell you which one is 1 and 2, the games look the same, i mean yoshi and a drill arn't exactly ground breaking sequal innovation. that being said great score i cant wait to pick up my copy and my shiny new black wii soon!!!!!!

I think people are just so used to 3D Mario games changing so drastically from 64 --> Sunshine --> Galaxy that this will take some unnecessary heat for not being "different enough". But really, if you showed "casual" players sequels for most games, I don't think they'd be able to tell much of a difference unless there are dramatic location/gameplay changes.

I could not hesitate to wait for me to receive ONM to check the overall score of Super Mario Galaxy 2. A vast amount of effort must have been produced to try and improve on Super Mario Galaxy or place in line with Super Mario Galaxy in quality. I am almost certain that this goal will be breached.

That's an insanely good score, I don't think ONM ever gave a game 100%, even OOT only got like 97 or 98%, and that's widely considered to be the best game ever. So 97% for Galaxy 2 is an amazing score.

OoT got 95%

Not the original NOM review.

Perhaps ONM re-reviewed it (for Virtual Console perhaps)

Ah.... yes I guess you got that score from their website, it's for the Virtual Console release. In the old NOM mags it was either 97 or 98% I am sure... it was the only game that was that high (with Resident Evil 4 and I think Metroid Prime 1 point below it)

No it didn't.

I assume you're referring to this review of OOT, which is about the Virtual Console Wii version, Like TWRoO mentioned. When it originally released in 1998, it was awarded a score of 97% by Nintendo Official Magazine, and they called it 'the best videogame ever' (as did most videogame publications).

I actually digged through my old magazines and managed to uncover a review score of OOT... Sorry the pic's a bit blurry, my phone's camera is utter crap. But it's clear enough to make out the score's definitely 97%, and not 95.

Incidentally, I also found the issue in which they reviewed Majora's Mask, which got a 96% score...

I stopped purchasing NOM sometime during the GameCube era, because the magazine got insanely expensive in my country then. So I dunno if any games scored higher than OOT's 97% since then. I'm quite certain Banjo Tooie got a 97% as well, but I'm too lazy to go find out and be 100% sure. Also, I'm not entirely in the know about this, but I take it NOM & ONM are the same magazine? As in, ONM was formerly named NOM?

So, anyway, 97% for Galaxy 2 is an insanely great score.

*Edit: as a little tidbit, they gave Mario 64 a score of 95%.

NOM became ONM yes... though it wasn't the same staff.... then again the timespan I read NOM they went through a few staff changes anyway, same for ONM.

I think Tooie got a 96%. I distinctly remember OoT being the highest rated game for them, there were a small set of games (4-5) that managed 96 throughout N64 and GameCube life.

I wish somebody would hurry up and leak it.

That's not innovation... new content isn't innovation at all.  See new ideas done a way that has never been thought of before to deliver a new type of product or turn an old product on its ear is innovation.

But there is nothing wrong with not innovating as long as you don't stagnate yourself, but the industry kinda learned their lesson with that during the NES Era and at least tried to do new and different things every sequel by the SNES era, which isn't innvation but keeps a product from becoming boring (AKA stagnent)

Okay then, that's what I thought, yeah.

As for Banjo Tooie, I wasn't sure, but I vaguely remembered it getting a 97% score, so I looked it up. And I was right, it got a 97%, like OOT.

Also, I found out Perfect Dark got the same score, and Donkey Kong 64 got a 96%, as did the original Banjo-Kazooie...
