Forums - Sony - PS2 is pretty much dead and I blame Sony.

The ps2 is dead because it's old and most everybody has moved on from it. It's common sense really.

BC has nothing to do with PS2's software sales.

compare it to other 10+ year old consoles without BC?, how are DC or xbox doing right now in term of software sales??

Compare to other 10+ year old consoles WITH BC? How are Gamecube or GBA doing in term of software sales?

the fact is, it's 10+ years old, are you serious??

You've missed the point ENTIRELY. The other consoles you mentioned have nohing to do with this discussion. I'm simply saying Sony could have prolonged the life of the PS2 futher if they made the PS3 BC. Also, they could have sold PS2 games on PSN. That would have been huge.

They still could sell PS2 games on PSN but they would just have to get around the emulator problem with the PS3 and 2's chip. Besides BC would have cost Sony by now At least another billion dollars of losses on top of what the PS3 already lost.

It crashes their profitability... Having BC in the PS3 cost quite a deal apparently and it negated the need for people to purchase PS2's (which had a profit margin). If they added PS2 support to the PS3, people would flock to the PS3 and they would've bled even harder. Not exactly the business call to make.

However, I do think we are looking to deep into this. And they can add software emulation (if it's possible any time they want) Sony killed it because of hardware costs thus going to the cost of consumers of 500$ and 600$ PS3's. Because when they removed it they lowered the price. Because I would assume they didn't want to keep over supporting the PS2, while the PS3 died an ugly death

the PS3 was their future for 1. Games 2. Blu-Ray IP, (for which they own around 25% I think in royalties, because the PS3 basically killed HD DVD). Maybe their desision was wrong. But hindsight is always 20/20.

Now if they can release an update with software emulation and PS2 PSN games that would be the best thing for everyone. But I don't know if they're going to do that.

If PS2 production is halted and the PS3 is making a profit at that time, then you can expect BC returning.

Or, due to the success of the God of War Collection, you might more of those kind of things, as it garners more profit than a 15 euro game on PSN (for Sony at least)

no it died because.... ITS 10 BLOODY YEARS OLD!!!!! thats praticaly 200 years old in human years :P i think sony hav done an incredable job with the ps2

No, actually I don't expect that to happen at all. I'm just saying it would be reasonable for them to do that.

There have been other collections which I've hoped for, that have been discussed such as Shadow of Colossos. However this involves more expensive porting it as opposed to just copy and pasting it with slight emulation improvement. Such as the current PS1 PSN games. I don't even know if software emulation on the ps3 for ps2 is
possible with the specs it has though. But software emulations would allow them to release many ps2 games on psn rather cheaply.

But I think this would more likely occur on PS4 or later interations, when the current ps2's break and become hard to get. And the ps2 games become more nostalgic.

But this is just my thinking, basically creating my own completely random business plan on a possible way to implement ps2 games on psn. not any basis on fact.

not true, ps2 SW has to sell at a very low price, so thats not an incentive to sony, it has a low cost of development but thats good for developers no to sony, since they cant charge much to developer, they have to help ps2 developers remain competitive in the new gen, also, once people have seen the new consoles thats what they want to play.

Having BC was a plus but it is too expensive for consumers, if they has keep the BC the ps3 would cost US$100 more today, instead people that want to play ps2 games can buy the console if they want to for want they would pay extra for a PS3 with BC.
