Forums - Sony - PSP, How Much Is Left?

I little while back (here on the forums) I mentioned that I thought at this years E3 Sony would announce the PSP's successor.

I called it PSP2 (or PSP squared for people who don't know what that high 2 is for). Of course recently Sony announced God of War: Ghost of Sparta and it got me thinking that Sony is really determined to keep the PSP going.

Now of course God of War: Ghost of Sparta will be available through the PSN Store for PSP. So it's still possible that Sony will still announce the successor at this year's E3 blowout. My thought on this is that Sony's PSP2, needs to support the PSN. Which would mean that Sony could still release Ghost of Sparta and still keep Ready At Dawn happy by not giving a good enough window of possible sales.

Anyway. With the announcement of this mega game for PSP. I now think another pontential thing could happen this year.

A PSP 4000 series announcement going side by side with 3000k series/Go price cuts.

The 3000k could drop as low as $129.99 (the current price is $169.99 and has been there for almost 3 years now) and the Go could drop as low as $199.99 (current price is $249.99 and that's way to much and is dramatically hurting sales). While the 4000k series would not launch for more than $149.99 to $169.99.

So either a revision and price cut or the PSP has it's successor announced.

What do you all think? Only constructive debate, please.

The Battery in PSP is full, so about 4 hours of gameplay

I'd just like to interject for a moment

a PSP2 might not be a good idea right now. nintendo owns the handheld market.

and knowing sony a PSP2 will cost like $350 because of high end graphics

and PSP2 games will probably be $50 brand new because prices are always going up when crap is new

PSP4000??? the 3000 is fine except it needs a price drop. another revision seems like a waste of time

I think the PSP is fine as is, the system is great, library is great, all in all there is no need t abandon it yet.

PSP could still have a lot of life left in it.

PSP 4000

Pricecuts on all models, especially the Go.

Bundles with God of War/ Little Big Planet/ Gran Turismo from Sony 1st party. All 3 choices available in all regions.

Monster Hunter 3 Portable in Japan will keep it selling very well. As will Agito XIII.

Sony should only consider doing a portable if they have exclusive content - and experiences - for it.

I mean, they should be ashamed that the top sellers aren't first party. Not a single million seller in japan for them - in their own territory! Why, because all they offered were "little brothers" to their big bad console games!

Asking the question... PSP should last another 1-2 years, but in depressing state.

I would say it was done for, but then I see this upcoming lineup:

1. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
2. Final Fantasy XIII Agito
3. God of War: Ghost of Sparta
4. Valkyrie Chronicles 2
5. Parasite Eve - The Third Birthday

I mean...Daaaaamn. As I told my wife a couple days ago, Im going to be getting more PSP games in the 2nd half of 2010 than I am PS3 or 360 games (and that is unheard of for me...i haven't bought a PSP game since Chains of Olympus, i think). It's just crazy that the system is getting this many huge games at this point. But it is, so it's not dead.

Owner of PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Switch, PS Vita, and 3DS

The PSP isn't dead at all, I mean, sure it doesn't sell as much as anything else, but heck, it's a pure profit maker for Sony, I'm betting that they make atleast double, heck, even triple the money from each sale...

At the moment, you'll see that the sales are pretty low, but fastforward to the release of the games that epicurean listed, and one he forgot which I'm begging for... Kingdom Hearts (Already released in JP), I'm sure the sales will shoot up, it's just not selling well at the moment, because there aren't any new games out for new consumers to be interested in, and to be honest, the average consumer will usually disregard the backlog of a console while buying it...

Don't forget kingdom hearts birth by sleep and Resident Evil psp

2 Extreme ways Sony can do things:

1) Cut dramatically the price of the PSPgo to 100$. That's the fair price. And cut the other model to 130$.
Offer many PSP games from PSN at great value to incentive PSPgo purchase.

2) Discontinue PSP, call it dead and start all over with PSP2, avoiding the mistakes they did with PSP such as stupidly high price point for a portable gaming device.
