Forums - Gaming - Metal Gear Solid Showdown Round #3 - Rate MGS4!

7.8/10

Nanobots: Kojima's Deux ex Machina.

Other than that, half of the characters were forgettable, and the other half were just plain annoying (Looking at you Akiba *rolls eyes*). Oh, and Otacon is as annoying as ever. May we never have to listen to him cry ever again.

Music was great however, and while the gameplay wasn't the most intuitive out there, but it got the job done. Bosses were forgettable (Well, Screaming Mantis was cool... but why would they tease me with a fight against Psycho Mantis? I'm still mad about it. Boo!) and the Meryl/Akiba marriage scene actually managed to make me embarrassed for them.

Vamp once again stole the bad guy show (and in another cutscene with Raiden that I would rather play than watch. Maybe Raiden will have flashbacks where I can fight him in Rising.) and the ladies too. Take that Otacon! But of course, the boss fight against him was yawn worthy.

I just don't know what to think of this game actually (heck, this pretty much goes for what I think of the series). I mean, it's riddled with so many instances of mediocrity... but at the same time it has some really really great stuff that makes it a blast to play and be a part of.

So... that leaves it as:

MGS: 8.4
MGS2: 7.1
MGS3: 8.8
MGS4: 7.8

I give it a 10/10.

Why?

My favorite MGS and my favorite game. I give it a 9.8/10 because it could have done soo much more with weapons, AI, VR Training. The story, soundtrack, gameplay, cutscenes, characters and an the excellent ending are what make this game my favorite.
The greatest thing about this series is that Kojima doesn't have to make each game with the same direction in order to keep the fanbase satisfied. MGS2's storyline is much more action driven than MGS3's, also different setting. Kojima recycles the elements with fresh new ways of telling his plot and for me and alot of other people it works wonders. And after MGS3 there was MGS4 which had even less in common with each other, just proves that fans of certain series will stick around as long as you make your games with heart, and MGS4 has lots of it.

IMO it's the greatest game in history. Just beautiful.

10/10

Simply one of the best games ever IMO. Especially the story was the best I have seen in videogames (Heavy Rain comes close).

2012 - Top 3 [so far]

                                                                             #1                                       #2                                      #3

7.5/10 - The character models are beautiful, and the fan service for MGS fans is awesome! However the gameplay, which was solid, was too few and far between. You get about 20-30 minutes of gameplay, so you're just starting to get into it and they 20-30 minutes of cutscene starts. Then you're back in the gameplay thinking "Now what was I doing again?", it was disjointed and killed the fun factor for me. Whereas the first and second games in the series focused on fun gameplay and some good exposition, as the series has gone along the focus has shifted to the exposition and left the gamplay behind a bit.

9.0/10. Still one of the best games i've ever played.

5.0/10 - Good God, what happened Kojima?

Story - full of plotholes, contradictions and pretty much every plot twist involved nanomachines. Why is Vamp the way he is? Nanomachines. Dialogue suffered from repetition thus making a lot of the cutscenes too drawn out: Person A says something and Person B repeats what person A said. Also the story/dialogue was pretty cheesy. I know MGS games had some cheesy moments, but MGS4 took it to the next level.

"You were the lightning in that rain, you can still shine through the darkness."

Let's not forget Otacon crying over a one-night stand. It was so hilarious, and I didn't buy the romance between the two. Oh and watching Meryl & Akiba fight off the frogs in the last chapter was classic Hollywood stuff. Speaking of Akiba...

Akiba - It boggles my mind that he was brought in as one of the main characters; he's a comedic relief for the series. Anyways, he ended up being annoying, and every scene he was involved in made me roll my eyes. I just couldn't take Akiba serious.

Zero - I don't why they brought him. Watching Big Boss cut off the oxygen tank on this 100 year old man was pretty awkward. This was more ridiculous than Dante sewing a cross across his chest in Dante's Inferno.

Drebin Points - made the game very easy and didn't compel you to conserve ammo. Ran out of ammo during a boss fight? No problem! Just buy some by pressing start. You can also purchase stealth camo and infinite ammo. What a joke.

Beauty & The Beast Corps - suffered from poor character development. You knew nothing about them before fighting them, and they weren't involved in the story. You got to know backstory of the B&B Corps after defeating which was basically too late. I skipped the backstory of the last two because they were already dead. Who cares, let's move on.

Weak codec support - this was a huge disappointment for me. MGS1 had a fantastic supporting cast, MGS2 had a lot of funny codec moments, as well as MGS3, but MGS4 had nothing. There were two people on support, and there were very little to none interesting codec conversations.

A.I. - awful. I stood in front of the enemies, and they couldn't detect me. WTF? Getting around places was pretty easy.

Cutscene to gameplay ratio - nine hours of cutscenes with only four hours of gameplay. Kojima, take note from Uncharted 2: that's how you tell a story. What pissed me off what that there were many cutscenes that made me think, "wow, I wish I could play that scene." Some notable scenes are Raiden v Vamp, Snake encountering the first Gecko, etc. I wish there were more gameplay; I don't mind long cutscenes as long as the story isn't terrible. Unfortunately, MGS4 was atrocious and felt too drawn out with its repetitive dialogue.

I did like the gameplay minus the Drebin points. Rex v Ray and the final boss were solid. The final fight brought so many memories; quite possibly the best way to end it. Visuals & music were excellent as well. Everything else was a failure.

Try playing in a harder difficulty level next time.

9.5/10 I would give it 10 if Snake wasn't old, I hate the fact that they made him an old man, the game would have been just as good with young Snake and I also hated the way it ended the series. I loved the end fight though, one of the best fights ever. So much emotion and the epic music...... Beautiful T_T the online was decent too. The game was a little on the short side though, didn't take me that long to complete it.
