I was just at the Busan, Korea Car Expo.

There were more erections on display than cars thanks to all the car babes. Do western auto shows still have dozens of half naked car bimbos?

Anyways, there was also a big Playstation display with PS3 and PSP games, a big Gran Tourismo display and some games in 3D, including Motorstorm 2, so I gave it a go. I was pretty skeptical since I've tried 3D tv a few times and was kind of dissapointed. The first time I tried one in Japan, the picture felt less like 3 dimensions and more like... 3 specific planes. Like everthying was a flat cardboard cut out placed either in the foreground, middle ground or background. The second time was a better video, with some true "wow" moments, but I couldn't help but notice that sometimes It would just drop out of 3D and I could see the seperate images.

Well this time you had to stand on a specific spot, so The picture never went funny. I won't comment on the actual game since it was the first time I'd ever played it, but I found the 3D to be neither as hindering as I had in past 3D tv experiences, nor as beneficial as... anything. There was definitely a visual downgrade, but for the most part it worked fine and didn't add much. Stuff looked like it got closer as I drove to it, but nothing really seemed to occupy a different space. It was sort of something you get used to quickly and don't really realize, except that 3d in it's current tech just doesn't look as clean. I'd hate to have to play long term 3d games.

So... The car babes were hot until you started to fixate on the plastic surgery and their alien eyes and shaved cheekbones, the cars were shiny, and 3D gaming as a novelty is neither an improvement enough to warrant it nor a mistake enough to hope it fails.

I can honestly say I'm indifferent to it with the utmost conviction.

How did you notice a visual downgrade in the first time you played the game?

Because I don't recall Motorstorm 2 being widely panned for having a substantial visual downgrade over Motorstorm 1 (which I have played a bit at Instore displays)

I think it will be better to wait for games which were designed for stereoscopic 3D support before coming to conclusions. The first few games to support this are some older PS3 games which aren't optimised nor designed for this. Future games will certainly show better results.

But I think having this option for these games is a nice addition for people with 3DTVs in the future who already own a PS3 and these games today.

However I think Super Stardust HD will be a good cheap launch title worthy of buying for its 3D support, the coders are top notch and probably their engine will see a good optimised overhaul.

I completely agree with you there. Games that are designed with 3D in mind would certainly tackle things differently, not to mention earlier efforts might just not do it very well. However, my concern is that what prevented 3D from being a worthwhile addition in Motorstorm 2 will do the same for other games because the nature of videogames is much different than movies.

The primary use of 3D in movies so far (oh lets be honest, the only reason) is to have crap fly out at you causing you to say "wow that's cool" There was a scene in Avatar where I wasn't even paying attention to the dialogue because an open door was sticking out so far I thought it might hit me in the face. I loved that door.

But videogames work a little differently. Since you're controlling the action on screen, you're usually controlling a protagonist of some sort. Be it a first or third person perspective, the action takes place from the perspective of the television screen. If something is flying out from the screen at you, it's position in 3d space is past that of the protagonist. Sure we can still get explosions and flying stuff that jumps off the screen at us, but I imagine that the implementation for anything more than superfluous debri will be very limited. I guess we could have the protagonist itself be what appears to float in the middle of the room, but given the not quite perfected tech, having the whole play time focus around a jumped out object would probably be a lot worse for your eyes than the Virtual Boy ever was.

I wish it the best, but... hey wait a sec... a New Myst type game with beautiful 3d worlds and inventive 3d puzzles could actually be really cool. hm...

Actually myst sounds like the perfect game for 3d. But I wont ever support 3d in the home (and in the cinema, I still choose to see most movies in 2d) until I don't need glasses. I already wear glasses and having two glasses on not only is uncomfortable but actually really hurts my eyes.

After Avatar my eyes felt like I imagine an addict would feel after spending a night stealing shit for their addiction and getting no sleep.

Do you have any pics of the car babes?

I'm going to wait with getting a 3DTV for a couple of years myself.

But I think this pioneering by Sony on the PS3 is important for the future. First I am going to get Playstation Move and I think 3D can help a lot to help with realism for this type of gaming in the future.

For example playing Ping Pong where the ball goes towards you, stereoscopic 3D can help a lot to make this feel far more realistic. Or for example in one of the demos they showed a demo where you pile up parts in a 3D space, stereoscopic 3D can help a lot with depth perception for a similar puzzle game to better understand the depth.

Eventually I hope this tech will get gaming and multi-media (on PS3 or PS4) back to a level I envisioned as pioneered on Amigas.

Pioneering using the Amiga for virtual reality gaming (including head/hand motion tracking, stereoscopic 3D, first person gaming including capture the flag / deathmatch, networked multi-player and built-in microphone, etc) (this all at a time before even the very limited Wolfenstein existed, which is often wrongly put forward as a pioneering title):

An article from 1991:

http://www.hitl.washington.edu/scivw/scivw-ftp/commercial/WIndustries/W.descrip

Some snips:

"Technology has also become available to provide input to the sense of touch, through pneumatic tactile gloves and force-feedback techniques (eg. the steering wheel on a driving simulator)."

"A stereoscopic view of the room was also possible by wearing a head-
mounted visor with a rotating shutter, a separate image being
presented to each eye on alternate frames of the video image."

"Looking at the joy-stick through the visor it appears as a gun. Extending one's arm shows a virtual arm rendered in bright pink polygons."

Imagine having to turn your head to look outside your side window in a future Gran Turismo to see the cars driving next to you from inside your car. Imagine sitting in a virtual cinema and watching a Blu-Ray movie on a huge screen with your friend's virtual avatars sitting beside you and sharing thoughts, etc, etc. 8-)

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

No I don't. Didn't bring the camera, but judging by the hundreds of middle aged men with SLR's and huge lenses. You can probably find a lot of pics on the internet. Yes they're incredibly hot, but stare at their faces for too long and it starts to weird you out. I really hate that the country with the most attractive women in the world also has an obsession with cutting up their faces to look like aliens.

well stof, I'd advise on trying out PC games in 3D to see what it can bring to gaming when done properly. Batman is supposed to be great (and designed with it in mind
Or go see Avatar (or an other 3D designed movie... not the 2D->3D ones).

To me 3D gaming offers just about as much as HD does... not much but a little sparkle... but why not have it?
