About $40-60 a month on average. Which is about 2-3 games (old/budget games) each month or one new release. So about $600 for the year.

Haven't bought any hardware for a couple years now.

Obviously I'll be spending more when the 3DS arrives

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
I have spent like well over $700 this year on gaming (that includes a Wii purchase, game purchases, game rental subscription, accessories, points cards and Xbox Live Gold subscription card).
From now on I don`t think I`ll be spending too much.
Hardware Purchases: I`m good for this year. I was flirting with the idea of picking up a PSP but PSP2 will probably be announced at E3 so I`m gonna skip out on that.
Game purchases: I don`t think I`ll be buying games much. The rental subscription + my current backlog are covering my gaming needs.
Game rentals: I paid for my subscription months in advance. So my subscription is all covered for the next 4 months worth of rentals. I don`t have to renew until then.
Accessories: I don`t want anymore at the moment. Maybe if NATAL comes out with something interesting this holiday.
Points: I`ll buy some more when I need them. Right now I don`t.
Xbox Live Gold: I`m a member until May 2011. Don`t have to worry about that now.
Gaming can be damn expensive when you buy so much at once. But overall, it`s actually a cheap form of entertainment if you think about how many hours of entertainment you get out of it. It`s cheaper than other forms of entertainment out there.
Idk the exact number, but way too much.
End of 2009 sales predictions:
PS3 - 33 Million     360 - 40 Million    Wii - 75 Million
I'm not going to figure out exactly, because it would depress me, but near $1,000 a year for sure, especially if you figure in consoles.
New game every month - 40
3 Pre-owned games a month - 30+
New hardware once a year - 200+
Totals:
40 x 12 = 480
30 x 12 = 360
480 + 360 + 200 = 1040 (at least)
So waaaayy too much XD
I play PC and PS3. The best of both worlds.
Most people say less than $1000.
I don't think $1000 per year is that much. It's less than $100 per month. Compared to other expenses that's nothing. Food costs me $200 per month. My car including gas about $300 per month. Rent for apartment $500.
Actually my whole gaming budget is about $150 per month, but I tend to never reach that amount cos I'm too cheap, plus my back log of games is always increasing.
I buy almost one or two brand new game Wii or DS game each month, I buy also on Steam, but almost always qpecial offer cause I don't want digital distribution to be my exclusive game provider.
I also plan to buy a ps3 in the near future, and I'll buy games from the secondhanded market.
So yeah, expect a monthly budget of 100 pounds/euro per months. Quite cheap for a hobby that takes me 4 or 5 hours a day, (and I do not play on hacked games). We should consider the monthly ratio price/hour for any hobbies, whether it is whaever sports, books, playing cards, DVD/Blurays...
At least $800 a year.
Pixel Art can be fun.
