Forums - Gaming - End Of Nations. NEW MMO-RTS ! From The INVENTORS Of The RTS Genre !

Yes that caught your attention.

Now while it's not solely the inventers of rts. Many of the people in petroglyph studios comes from westwood studios, the creaters of command & conquer and dune 2.

Once again it looks like they are set to reinvent the genre. Their previous games include universe at war (a underrated game in my opinion which was published by sega but not marketed well at all.) and empire at war.. If you are a rts player, you've atleast heard about that one (most famous star wars rts out there.)

They are also currently working on a mmo with strategic elements which is in open beta right now (and is pretty unique and interesting.) called mytheon.

I know this sounds like a advertisement but I wanted to spread the good word about this game because it looks fantastic. Not purely visually but in terms of gameplay..  I'm also sure that the visuals will be improved before launch :P

Anyways. Heres the official website and some videos:

Some words from known websites:

  • G4 "..maybe the real-time strategy genre is long overdue for a rethinking like it gets in End of Nations.." http://tinyurl.com/22kvuqh ^CM 1 day ago
  • Joystiq writes that .."the game is unquestionably impressive." http://tinyurl.com/25xklrl ^CM 3 days ago
  • GamePro: “I'm excited about End of Nations purely because of the scale -- 51 players with varying army sizes" http://tinyurl.com/2agctah ^CM 3 days ago

I don't necessarily like the setting and cartoon graphics but +50 players on at the same time is fantastic.

It really does have a Red Alert feel to it :D

I hope Petroglyph will rise to the heights of old Westwood.

Also, MMORTS is like the features mentioned in GW2 something that I have been daydreaming about for years :D

    I LOVE ICELAND!

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they are going to do with it, how it'll work etc.

I've also been trying the open beta to their (soon to be released) mmo mytheon and it's surprisingly good. I don't usually like mmo's a lot.. but you can feel the strategic core of the game.. It's very unique.

Anyways, gotta say, end of nations has the most badass background on a website ever. After loading the site, try to look at the top of the page again, you'll see the background come alive !

errrr.... I watched the first 2 vids... and i can't say it's really exiting. This looks like a squad command RTS, I didn't see any bases, just groups of 5 players meeting and fighting.
Although a huge map can be fun, if you don't have a base building strategy, there is little fun in a multiplayer RTS...

But more is to be known on this game.

    and errr... they invented RTS?

    wiki
"Dune is a 1992 video game, based upon Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. Developed by Cryo Interactive and published by Virgin Interactive, is the first of the Dune computer games. Dune blended adventure with economic and military strategy, and is considered by many the most immersive Dune computer game."

"Real-time strategy (RTS) games are a genre of computer wargames which do not progress incrementally in turns.[1] Brett Sperry is credited with coining the term to market Dune II.[2][3]"

"Herzog Zwei for the Sega Genesis in 1989 is the earliest example of a game with a feature set that falls under the contemporary definition of modern RTS.[11][12] In Herzog Zwei, though you only control one unit, the manner of control foreshadowed the point-and-click mechanic of later games. Also, control and destruction of bases was an important aspect of the game, as were the economic/production aspects of those bases.

Notable as well are early games like Mega Lo Mania by Sensible Software (1991) and Supremacy (also called Overlord - 1990). Although these two lacked direct control of military units, they both offered considerable control of resource management and economic systems. In addition, Mega Lo Mania has advanced technology trees that determine offensive and defensive prowess. Another early (1988) game, Carrier Command by Realtime Games, involved real-time responses to events in the game, requiring management of resources and control of vehicles. The early game Sim Ant by Maxis (1991) had resource gathering, and controlling an attacking army by having them follow a lead unit. However, it was with the release of Dune II from Westwood Studios (1992) that real-time strategy became recognized as a distinct genre of video games.[4]"

they invented the term "RTS" and sealed the template, but you can't really say they created it.

cryo ? Looks like a bug on wiki. It was developed by Westwood studios. They are correct about brett sperry though

They were in either case part in creating the rts genre. There were some games before with rts elements. Regardless of those games westwood founded the template that rts games are founded on, hence I can profoundly claim that they invented the genre as we know it.. At the very least.

anyways, I have confidence that if anyone can make a game like this work, it's them.

Dune 1 was an adventure game. Dune 2 was only named so because they found out about the other dune game being released close to theirs :p
