Forums - Gaming - The state of the industry after motion controls are all established

I want all of your opinions because I value them all. This is no argument, because I've been awakened to some new things that would've argued against myself in the past. I didn't believe in the Move or Natal to tell you the truth and now as the days go by as a gamer, the Move becomes a larger interest to me as the days go by. Because of that interest I have decided to keep my mind completely open to Natal and what it has to offer me despite its highly casual approach. I am starting to see the possibilities. The list of questions goes as follows:

1. After great games on the Wii like Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda and other potential hot titles come for the other peripherals, do you believe review scores will be rated on a higher level than they used to where balance outweighs simplicity? (to elaborate) Standout games like Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda have balance, but they are few and far between. If all consoles attain their version of quality highlighting each in its own right, do you feel that reviewers will have to flip the script on how they approach reviewing new genres on the Move or Natal?

2. Do you feel that the level of online gaming will increase or decrease due to the newer motion controls. A lot of people much like myself have had fun playing COD: WAW on the Wii. With the new peripherals raising the bar do you think online multi-player could reach new heights?

3. What types of new genres do you see coming based on common knowledge of what the controllers can do?

4. As we await E3...what do feel are the chances of the Wii outshining the new peripherals?

1.) For sure... they are going to have to do some thing to deal with the influx of games that are not made for them... perhaps it's time for someone to step up and start a major website based on the more casual games with a focus on what a casual person would feel if they were looking to buy the game.
2.) They certainly open some doors...
3.) I think that Sony will stick to tried and true genres and not go much further out then they already have with games like LBP and the upcoming racing game. I think Microsoft will, by the nature of the device, be the ones doing the most innovative. New genres and taking stuff and bringing it to a whole new level... teaching games... especially things like pilates and and all the other girl workout bullshit.
4.) Zero to none... nothing they can do hardware wise will even have nearly as great an impact...

From the HD consoles and the games that they have been getting of late, I think it's pretty obvious that Sony has diversity and innovative ideas in gaming in the bag (along with the ever so famous FPS etc)

1) You worded this the way it's really hard to comprehend, but I got the idea... hopefully.

As far as I can tell, not really. If we assume that whole idea of game review is some kind of buyer's guide (which I beleive is very narrowed down definition, but unfortunately that's what they are mostly), then most reviewers do quite a bad job reviewing games based on new values and targeted at audience differ from those who usually read game reviews (note, I didn't say motion-controlled games, since motion controllers aren't enough or even required for such games, traditional games with motion controllers will do fine review wise). Though they're good at catering to their audience, thus some may find they're making a good job reviewing such games to audience mostly not interested in them.

They won't change this kind of attitude in nearest future, though I expect some hypocrisy and double standards to be involved, when some motion-controller shovelware on PS3 will be scored higher than the same quality games on Wii simply due to the fact the former are in HD. But not by too much.

2) Motion contollers are irrelevant to online play.

3) If by 'genres' you mean some gameplay cliches that a lot of devs are using, or at least games of this 'genre' have massive sales, i.e. genre-definfing, then there will be nothing that already haven't been done in last four years on home consoles. Unless Nintendo will make smth new and motion-controlled (which I doubt, since they're focused on Vitality Sensor by now) or Natal will explode (not a big believer either).

4) All hype will go to Natal and to lesser degree to Move, they'll get good sales based on hype and all 3rd party support you can imagine. But PSmove is for sure will fall short to deliver some meaningful sales long-term, Natal might be more successful  depending on software provided. Wii won't outshine both of those with it's Vitality Sensor in eyes of media and industry, but likely to deliver actual impact on consumers long-term with it's Wii Relax considering their track record.

1. Game scores will stay low for the Wii, but will be exceptionally higher for motion-controlled games on the Move or Natal. Journalists will claim "this is what the Wii should have been!" ... Meanwhile the Wii will still be outselling the PS3 and 360.

2. Decrease. Most people that play "online" games do this because they are lazy. They can't even find the energy to get up and go to their friends house to play a game. This laziness will make them entirely resistant to any form of control that requires movement.

3. Party games and fitness games.

4. Pretty good as the Wii has already out shined it's competitors for three years.

1/ a lot of Wii motion game are rated low because they are .... not mature and not caqlled Zelda/Mario. To put it clear : rthey are not enought badass and they lack brand recognition if they dont come from Ninty.
This is not a problem with motion control. This is a problem with Wii games.

2/ Online = FPS
FPS may be improved because of Wiimote/Move while I m not sure Natal will be very usefull for FPS (we will see)
At the end, people will continue playing FPS with the old control because it plays ... good !
And even if they "upgrade" it will not make them play more.

Even if motion control bring new people to gaming, those people are generally not interested in FPS and online (like the casual Wii userbase)

3/ I have no clue. Natal is more original so I m guessing the newer experience will come from Natal.
Neverthless, right now, I think, the Natal high hype/expectation is based on PR talk or Xbox fans wanting their console to comeback in the weekly WW sales.

4/ well, 3DS may completely crush Sony technology particularly if you dont need glasses lol
I dont know what to expect from the Wii.
Surprisingly, they are the outsiders.
But, I really hope they have something better than a Wii HD.

Time to Work !

I think that the once "gimmick" wii superior controls for FPS will finally be "officially" superior over dual analog by many gaming journalists once some PS3 game arrives with it 4 years later than the Wii.

This is so true that you deserve the Nobel Award of Future Sight.

Microsoft and Sony will do the expected, which is to utilize sustaining innovation on motion controls. They'll make them better and bigger, just like they've been doing with most of their technology so far.

When you look at that, you may think Nintendo has no chance, and it may very well be that they have very little chance even in terms of sales. Because they've already gone through a lot of their potential, wereas Microsoft and Sony have a lot of unreached customers. This year will probably continue the trend of Sony and Microsoft getting a little more momentum.

The way Nintendo won last time was by changing the game completely. Even though Sony and Microsoft are doing motion controls now, they're still playing the same game they've always played. They're making things better, more technological, more robust, there's nothing really new here.

I don't think it's gonna happen this year quite yet, but when Nintendo is ready they'll change the paradigm away from motion controls and leave Microsoft and Sony behind, possibly with devices that serve purposes the public isn't even looking for anymore. But this year it's gonna be Sony and Microsoft being overhyped again, and Nintendo will do ok with their core franchises taking a spotlight. It's gonna be a slightly different, and more positive version of last year's E3 for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Next year though, I think Nintendo might change things a little.

1) I do not expect huge changes - I have never been one of those who claim reviewers have bias against the Wii. If developers bring high quality extended audience games to the PS360, they will continue to receive low reviews, just as the high quality Wii extended audience games received.

2) I think online multiplayer will very much be pushed by Sony and MS in order to increase hardware sales. If you spend a few months getting your arse handed to you by people using Move or natal, then you will throw away your old controller in disgust very quickly.

3) Nothing much that hasn't already come about on the Wii tbh

4) Don't have a clue. At the moment, move and natal don't seem to have many games that will interest either us forum dwellers or the mass market. However, that could be because companies are keeping things under wraps. I expect big E3's from everyone

5?) If I missed the point of any of your questions, then sorry
