Forums - Gaming - Four years later: Oblivion is still the best RPG this gen

Yes the article is correct its the BEST WRPG of this gen by a light year.

seriously the charm & epicness in Oblivion was TOO GOOD!

Fallout 3 & Dragon Age were boring compared to it and utter disappointments.

I still want my Elder Scrolls V....I REALLY WANT MY ELDER SCROLLS V! But I'll be playing Morrowing soon!

In terms of RPG's overall 2 beat oblivion for me this gen....FFXIII & Dragon Quest V Remake (yes this is a surprise, never expected to love it as much as I have).

you really need to give Dragon Age more time, i hated it at first then i restarted the game and it became my favorite.

I did & I have finished it & even replayed some of it.

But my eventual impressions was that its just not that good because for me the plot looses focus mid way through. The battle system is extremely boring but going from playing the game as a mage to a warrior is quite different, but the battle system is still boring. I didn't really like the music. From the makers of KOTOR the game was very disappointing for me.

another mistake is that I went in expecting an oblivion type exprience but it was something completely different.

Oblivion is like the "FF7" for me for WRPG's (in the metaphorical sense...FF7 isn't even my favorite FF for reference)....oblivion is like the "FF7" for many people as it got lots of non WRPG gamers in the genre. But it definetely did not deserve the hate it got on this site when I joined.....every oblivion thread was derailed by people saying it was dumbed down & so on.

The simple thing is doing side quests for the Mages guild & the Dark Brotherhood were some of the most fun times I;ve had! Oblivion saved my PS3 in its 2007 drought....its the only game I played for months, it was PS3's Best game for the year.

I've just been wanting another "oblivion" and no company has given it to me, its been 4 years now :(

anyway I will be getting ME1 & ME2 soon....I hope I like them.

Where was I?

@ darth

Morrowind eh? Cool! On what kind of comp, game version etc?

@Severance,

Yeah its strange that darth is saying Dragon Age was a disappointment, cos I remember how excited he was about it when he had played a good amount of hours (Dahli Elves or whatever).

He finished the game though so how is he supposed to give it more time?

@first bolded text.

you'll understand why they said this once you play Morrowind (since thats III and oblivion is IV)

@second bolded

eh.. .don't expect something like Elder Scrolls from ME2, its pretty linear like Dragon Age, i think you should go with Fable , The Witcher , Two Worlds and Gothic III , or of course the rest of the Elder Scrolls series

___________

I liked Dragon Age at first like I said....I LOVED it at first

but a big problem I have with MANY RPG's is that they deflate in terms of story a way through the game. Even Final Fantasie's tend to go a bit silly towards the end.

But with Dragon Age (we have had this discussion before) I just felt the story got boring half way through. Now the gameplay wasn't that great for me so that couldn't save the remaining hours.

@Severance

definetely want to get Fable, Witcher & the other ones you mentioned.

But maybe ME is a sci fi setting so I could get a KOTOR vibe from it, and clearly I don't mind "linear" games lol!

lol are u recommending Two Worlds?

I wouldnt recommend Gothic 3 either TBH. It's a very poor man's Oblivion.

And while it's not a bad game, I don't think The Witcher is at all darth's type of game.

And like u said, Mass Effect is Dragon Age in space.

I have to agree with thread. Oblivion was simply a bang when it released. Defined this gen alongside Gears of War.

Hehe, how was that controversy again - which of the films did you adore so much (just because it was your first Star Wars lol).?

And u didnt like Attack of the clones?
