another mistake is that I went in expecting an oblivion type exprience but it was something completely different.
Oblivion is like the "FF7" for me for WRPG's (in the metaphorical sense...FF7 isn't even my favorite FF for reference)....oblivion is like the "FF7" for many people as it got lots of non WRPG gamers in the genre. But it definetely did not deserve the hate it got on this site when I joined.....every oblivion thread was derailed by people saying it was dumbed down & so on.
The simple thing is doing side quests for the Mages guild & the Dark Brotherhood were some of the most fun times I;ve had! Oblivion saved my PS3 in its 2007 drought....its the only game I played for months, it was PS3's Best game for the year.
I've just been wanting another "oblivion" and no company has given it to me, its been 4 years now :(
anyway I will be getting ME1 & ME2 soon....I hope I like them.

eh.. .don't expect something like Elder Scrolls from ME2, its pretty linear like Dragon Age, i think you should go with Fable , The Witcher , Two Worlds and Gothic III , or of course the rest of the Elder Scrolls series

I wouldnt recommend Gothic 3 either TBH. It's a very poor man's Oblivion.
And while it's not a bad game, I don't think The Witcher is at all darth's type of game.
And like u said, Mass Effect is Dragon Age in space.
