Forums - Sony - PS3 Outsells PS3's last year in just 6 Months

Worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 have been heating up since the release of the PS3 Slim. Sony basically leaked the redesign and its price cut with their projection of 13 million PS3 sales worldwide by the end of their 2009 fiscal year. That target is likely to be exceeded, but with the results we have so far, things are definitely looking up for the console.

Following our report that the sales gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was soon to drop to just 4 million units, we wanted to highlight a nice little statistical nugget. Said nugget is the fact that the PS3’s 2009-10 performance has already outsold its full 2008-09 fiscal year with six months of results still to come.

By looking at Sony’s fiscal results as compared to Microsoft’s financial year, which ends June 30th, our original report shows that sales of the PS3 in the 2008-09 year close out at 9.6 million units. In comparison, between July 1st to December 31st 2009, sales of the PS3 already stand at 9.7 million units. This trumps the previous fiscal year with another six months (January 1st-June 30th 2010) still to go. The following table, in millions, compares the two years:

Sony’s fiscal year actually starts three month’s earlier than Microsoft’s on April 1st, but the advantage of using the above scale is that it allows us to see how successful the PS3 Slim has actually been. The console’s slim factor, which has recently been taken one step further, was released on September 1st and thus the above table shows its resultant boost. We eagerly await the rest of the year’s statistics.

Well, it's not like it was very hard. :o

Good for PS3 regardless, though!

The BuShA owns all!

Good, good.

4 ≈ One

Well Sony's fiscal year isn't like MS's fiscal year (ends in March not June) so that isn't correct. Definitely quite a bad mistake for that site. But I guess the comparison is still good and still shows how strong the slim/pricecut was for the PS3.

yea the table is wrong. the ps3 has already had 3q's in its fiscal year

If you want to be consistent with FY numbering conventions then it should read FY2009 for the 1st set of figures and FY2010 for the second. Financial years are always numbered according to the calendar year in which the FY ends (though perhaps not in the USA??).

So, according to the FY Sony operates in it exceeded it's FY 09 sales with an entire 1/4 (and a bit more besides) to spare. Still an excellent YoY result.

I guess SCEA could report its US only figures according to the US FY:

USA FY 09 -  (VGC Americas * 0.83) 2.95 million

USA FY10 1st 6 months - (VGC Americas * 0.83) 2.94 million

Not quite outselling in 6 months but as close as makes no difference, and less than 1 week's sales in the 2nd half to make it over the line.

Yep the PS3 slim performs well, it was released on the 1st of September 2009, so accounts for 1 month of that fiscal quarter and caused a big spike for that quarter and the holiday season.

VGChartz is expecting 3.1 million sold to retail for last quarter, this despite the reported shortages for Europe and North America?! I hope they are correct.
