I though there was a massive movement of rejection in Europe years ago. I just thought it was ever so slow NA that lingered on.

Well I say the Floppy Disk had it's run. I remember the good old days before I had a HDD where I would play gams and swap between 4 different disks. Sigh those were my good old days. I will always remember flooppies, but I have long moved on to USB sticks. They are more convientent and the data is more stable than diskette.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I agree that:

The floppy's time came a few years ago, for the masses
Not coincidentally, at the same time USB drives really got mainstream (not CDs)
But there are still legitimate niche uses (BIOS updates etc.) and legacy needs
Which is why I got a 100 pack of them a few years back that I have used less than a dozen of but will never throw away

And the OP's Rest In Peace picture should have been 3.5" in size

P.S. Above you will find one of the few uses of "a 100" that would be spoken as "a hundred" that I approve.

For me its been dead for years already and when it comes to new computers its been dead for about five years or more. I can't remember the last time I saw a new computer that included a floppy drive.

Hey, I collected ~420 floppies of porn too at the University (using "aub", a perl script to automatically uudecode binaries from newsgroups) before buying my own PC! I had also to install the mtools and write part of a driver to make an IBM Risc Station format and write HD floppies compatible with DOS and Windows. Back then I felt quite primitive and gone backwards with my spanking new 33k home connection, compared to the speed of the university network (in those glorious days the University still hosted totally uncensored alt.* newsgroups on its servers and piracy too was widespread until the first Italian law about it was approved, but porn still resisted a lot longer after that).

Copying those floppies on my first PC during 1997 took quite a long time and boring floppy switching, but how could I leave the fruit of my hard work to dust? ...And anyway then I had only a CD-ROM, I got my first CD writer 3 years later, so the floppy was my fastest (and only) writable removable medium. During my first 3 years owning a PC I was tempted to buy ED FDD, then Zip or Syquest, but what I really hoped for was MO drives prices to fall, instead they never became really affordable outside of USA, Japan and UK, at least not in time to become the new removable mainstream standard, so eventually CD and DVD writers flashed by them and became the (far inferior for reliability of writable and rewritable media) standard.

^I have pretty much no idea what you just said.

terms in your post I have never heard of/don't understand:

"aub"
perl
uudecode
mtools (unless that was a typing error)
Risc Station
ED FDD (FDD = Floppy Disc Drive, but what's ED?)
Syquest
MO drives

RIP Floppy 1.44 i still remember installing Doom 2 which was on 5 disks on my first disktop PC
486DX4 that was 14 years ago!

I am a proud GRAPHICS WHORE.

Floppy disks were great. And I used one till 2006 or so, when I had to bring papers to my school to print. Since they were .doc files, it hardly mattered the capacity of disks, so floppies were perfect. Poor floppies, I grew with them
