Forums - Gaming - Why do people even like RPG?

I must be the opposite of most people who've already posted. About the only turn-based RPGs I finished is Chrono Trigger and the Mario RPG games. I simply can't stand the combat systems these games have. They are usually boring and detatched. I really enjoy action RPGs though.

I like turn based RPG systems because they allow for more strategic gameplay. Fast action is fun and all, but sometimes I prefer a system that makes me think instead of simply react. That's what makes the best RPG gameplay systems fun for me.

Put me down for one of these please, you read my mind sir.

I like both turn-based and action JRPGs' battle systems. Maybe even the second a bit more, though I never turn down a SMT or FF game for being turn-based instead of action.
But then again I've never looked for a realistic style and it's not a prerequisite for fun in my book.

Well but how is it that I love Strategy games, even turn-based but not RPGs?

Oh and I totally HATE MMOs!

It might be that I just hate the leveling up thing! I rather like that I am given a better Weapon or better Unit... NOT getting better attributes especially if you have to spend a lot of time on it!

it's strategic , more than timing it require to think ways to defeat enemies

The best RPGs have the best stories and gameplay. Story alone doesn't cut it to make it super great.

If you want REALLY good RPG gameplay, play Tales or Star Ocean.

This...

Uhh in RPG's generally you normally get better weapons, aand better weapons, and leveling up which in tern gives you better abilities. Like generally speaking you get more choices in all those departments than most action or FPS games, unless , its an action game or FPS game with RPG elements.

For example Dragon Age or FFXIII, you decide what Class/Paradigm's and coniguration to use. You get to upgrade, or replace armour weapons. Acceceries to modify certain abilities, etc.

And in examples like Dragon Age or Deus Ex, the dialogue is part of the gameplay because you choose (although for the most part the outcome remains the same) what the character says.

Like obviously if theres gameplay elements in RPG's you don't like. you won't like rpgs, because it's basically how I am with most FPS, I don't like the first person shooting element that much. So thus, I don't play that many FPS. Although I do like a few.

I think you should give Final Fantasy 12 a chance. I think you'll really like it.

Pretty much this. What I demand most from my RPGs are enganging gameplay mechanics. Storylines in games are overrated, I want to be engrossed in an RPG's setting just as heavily as its story elements. But what I usually find is that I can't bring myself to slog through an RPG if I'm not enjoying the gameplay. Part of the reason why I've yet to beat Wild Arms 3 due to its watered down combat, but breezed through all the other games.

:D

That is one of the few RPGs I own I got 2 hours into the game and stoped playing!

Another RPG I have is "Persona 4" first time I played it for 1 hour got bored, now year later I got like 9 hours into it, I found out how cool this game is the story, the characters most of the gameplay BUT I just hated the combat system, the leveling up and combat seems So Repetitive and the most frustrating thing was that you got "Game Over" screen when you died... well yes it is realistic but not the point of games!
