Forums - Nintendo - I'm a Pokemon Noob (help)

Ugh I feel old saying this but I don't understand Pokemon. My nephew is all about it (he's 10, so it makes sense), but I haven't really followed the whole phenomenon as it developed and spread, so I have some questions and want to be able to better relate to my nephew. What are the differences between the dual versions they release, like ex: HeartGold/SoulSilver? Are there differences, because I see their sales are always combined...

Bah!

Heart Gold and Soul Silver are very similar games, yet there are a few differences.

The main difference is that there are a few Heart Gold exclusive pokemon, and likewise for Soul Silver.

The major differences between HeartGold and SoulSilver is that some of the pokemon are exclusive to one or the other version, A.K.A, you can only catch them in one version and if another person with the other version wants that pokemon, the only way to get it is by trading.

Other than that, since Pokemon Ruby/Saphire, that there have been legendary pokemon exclusive to each individual version. That doesn't apply completely to HeartGold/SoulSilver though, since you can catch both cover legendaries (Lugia and Ho-oh) on each game, though the story that revolves around each one will be more developed in one or the other (HeartGold for Ho-oh and SoulSilver for Lugia).

this is pretty much it

Well that answers one question I suppose. But why combine the sales of the two if they really are kinda different games? I assume most people don't just buy one, but buy both of them, yes? Or is the 'trading' a really big part of the experience?

Main difference is heart gold is awesome and soul sivler is sucky!! :P

If your nephew has soul silver I suggest you disown him.

I suspect the number of people who buy both versions is very low

The reason they're combined is that the games are the same. The differences are *extremely* minor. They're about 99.99% the same.

This. Most people buy one version.

So what about times when they only release one game, like Platinum? Are those all different Pokemon as well? Why not a dual release with that too?

Bah!

The games are extremely similar - the sales are added together because of this.
