But then you'd also have to take into account that some of those fat PS3s are sold by their previous owners, quite likely to people who didn't have a PS3 before.

But then you also have to take into account that some of those broken 360's were sold on eBay or other similar sites to people who fix them and then resell.
Broken 360's are purchased all the time, just like broken PS2's were.
For example, I could buy a broken 360 right now and probably have it up and running in under a half hour with no issues and then sell it for double what I paid.
I used to do it with PS2s.
