No.. MGS4 runs at 1024x768, and that's about 135.000 less pixels than 1280x720

"Alan Wake is running at 960x540 with 4x multisampling anti-aliasing"

This doesn't mean it won't look really good, it's just that you can't compete for a graphics title with a sub-HD game.

Wasn't that debunked by Remedy themselves?

I can't remember...

Read the article, they discuss what Remedy was defining as 720p

MGS4 runs at sub-HD. And that didn't stop it from winning best graphics awards over Gears of War 2, which, if I'm not mistaken, runs at 720p native.

MGS4 renders in 768p, that should be considered HD. Alan Wake's 540p is truly sub-HD. The vertical resolution is quite a bit extra compared to Alan Wake (this is what matters the most, increased vertical resolution holds more influence on human perception) and the horizontal resolution is also higher.

MGS4 looks great, certainly more detailed than Alan Wake, but IMO Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 look much greater still.

No, not really. The game is rendered in 540p and upscaled to fit in with the 720p HUD. That's all. Remedy didn't say it clearly (due to obvious reasons), but it's clear.

Yeah, NightAntilli cleared things up. I'm not saying the game looks bad, I totally agree it looks better than Gears of War 2. But native resolution isn't the deciding factor of better graphics.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

It falls just short of HD, as Night said. 135,000 pixels short. But again, that doesn't mean the game = terrible looking already, as I think MGS4 had the best graphics of all 2008 releases on consoles.

It should be considered HD, as for example older CRT or Plasma based HDTVs are 1024x768.

Officially: "720 vertical lines in widescreen ratio" is considered HD resolution.

I can't believe I'm interjecting here

But 1024x768 isn't a widescreen ratio

Correction, widescreen 1,024 x 768 resolution plasma HDTVs are still common and widely available:

This probably looks superior in motion compared to 1080i, which is also considered HD.

MikeB, tell me.

Is 1024:768 = 16:9?

But 1024x768 isn't a widescreen ratio

Actually, widescreen refers to the ratio of physical image dimensions, not of their x/y resolutions (i.e. pixels can not be physically square). In the case of digital signals and square pixels (most newer TVs and monitors) obviously the two ratios match. Think that the term "widescreen" originates on analog supports, where there's no notion of pixels.

Anyway, yes, 720p is rendered on older plasmas on panels that are natively 1024x768 with pixels physically elongated in a 4:3 ratio and is still considered HD according to some specifications.
