It was in the old days of Red/Blue/Yellow, because everyone had Pokémon and you could trade with people that had a different version than you. And there was always the mew and missigno glitches to get Mew and duplicate useful items.
nowadays? Not a chance in hell. Game freak added too many pokemon that you have to download only from Nintendo, wich has ruined the point and the fun of Mew, and has resulted in pokemon like Cellebi that are no longer handed out by Ninteno fading away because they have no equivalent of the mew glitch.
That's my biggest problem with the new games. No glitches that can be abused by the veterans. It takes away so much fun.

I see. Yeah I remember back in the day, on Blue, I caught them all, and then once again in Gold, I think. Only thing I got from that was some lame message congratulating me, too... XD
Anyway, it's weird you'd have to go through so much trouble now to get them all, makes it virtually impossible. I practically gave up on Pokémon after Ruby/Sapphire, but I think it'd be fun to try and collect 'em all. There's what, like 500 Pokémon now? I wouldn't mind having to trade between different versions, and I wouldn't use any glitches if it was possible to get all of 'em in normal ways, but I don't have the time, motivation, nor opportunity to visit any awkward events or whatever. I don't recall ever hearing of any such Pokémon events taking place anywhere remotely close to where I live, anyway.
I miss the good old days of easily comprehensible Pokémon, without worrying over ribbons, sports minigames, move-breeding and held items, and being able to train strong critters without having to immerse myself into complicated mathematical calculations, and considering mind-bogglingly vast amounts of additional information, stats, side-effects and exceptions...

I know how you feel :(
What bothers me most are the new Uber pokemons like Deoxys. They are just so ugly. Rayquasa is by far the best of them and he is just a green flying gyarados. Deoxys is like "OMG where did they go wrong? T_T" Those green and red and white godzilla things are "meh" Why didn't they make a real legendary dragon instead of these things? Oh and don't get me started on that allmighty dog thing that supposedly created the universe. What happened to my beloved Pokémon games? T_T

I know right, it's totally retarded!
You expressed my feelings perfectly. What's up with all these awkward-looking Pokémon? I remember when they used to be pretty cool looking. It feels like they're fast running out of creativity and originality, only adding new Pokémon for the sake of adding new ones. And don't get me started on how they've been recycling what's basically the same game for, what, 15 years? Pokémon is one of the very few Nintendo IP's that hasn't really been evolving over time, instead only getting incremental updates and extensions to gameplay mechanics that have been there since the 1st games. Heck, there have been more new ideas, fresh mechanics and evolved gameplay going from Pikmin 1 to 2, or Zelda 2 to 3, or even between Mario Kart games. The only other Nintendo IP that's remained so staggeringly unchanged over multiple games is Animal Crossing, and that hasn't seen nearly as many incarnations as Pokémon has...
Why can't we have nice-looking ones like Blastoise, Gyarados, Mewtwo, and whatnot? Instead, we get stuff like, err... urgh, can't even remember their names. Well you get the point. Why they don't finally get with the times and improve the graphics a bit. And those outrageously outdated 8-Bit GameBoy sounds! C'mon, this is 2010! Even Yellow had Pikachu crying out in an actual voice. And CHANGE UP THE GODDARN GAMEPLAY/STORY a bit, lol. 'Hey cool, new Pokémon game, wonder what I'll have to do... oh, choose a starter from fire/water/grass types, collect 8 badges, encounter some legendaries, beat the elite 4, beat my rival... gee, didn't see that coming.'
-_-'
And for all the Pokémon lovers who feel offended, don't worry, I still sort of like PKMN, but you can't tell me you wouldn't welcome a graphical/audio/story overhaul of the series. Everyone who has been playing for a few generations has to admit the formula is getting stale. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the games, or that they're bad, just that imo, the devs are lazy and could do a much, MUCH better job.
