Sorry to derail my own thread :) But, if I were to add something to my queue online through the browser, would my 360 start downloading in the background?

I don't think so. I think it automatically starts downloading your queue when you turn your xbox on. AFAIK the background downloading feature is used when you're in the process of downloading something and you turn your 360 off. It will continue the download until it is finished and then fully power off. It's similar to having a controller plugged into the play and charge kit when you turn the 360 off. It will continue to fully charge the controller in a low power state and then turn off when the controller is fully charged.

Gotcha, thanks priteshmodi.

Now that I think about it. The 360 would need to be on in order to process Natal output in order to do voice recognition. So I don't understand how Natal can power on the 360.

Natal is a controller, and like the current controller it has its own power source so just like the current controller it can power on the 360. Tv remotes have been doing it for a long time so it isnt exactly new tech.

It isn't that simple.  Something has to process the audio using voice recognition.  You don't want your 360 turning on whenever someone says anything around the camera.

Natal has a built in processor that handles the base voice recognition processing and functionality.  It likely has a set of default commands built in such as "360 On".

I think I'm getting goose bumps.  Only a few more months to E3.

No, it isn't that way, you might have to say something like, "Xbox On" to the camera in order to power On the XBOX , I suppose .

Right, which has the implication that without the 360 in some sort of always on, low power state, Natal needs to have its own processor that handles voice recognition.  Which, in turn, has its own set of implications.  The PrimeSense chip in its unaltered form does not do voice processing.  It also means that Natal would need some extra memory since voice recognition software needs training and training requires the data to be saved.  Unless Natal accesses data from the 360, it needs that extra memory in the camera.

So this looks like the finished article or at least very similar. The original was a more rectangular and chubby device. Looks ok nothing groundbreaking in design.

I do wonder about the name as Natal has worked so well for them from a recognition point of view. It is certainly one of the things that differentiated the Sony system which never really caught the imagination at least form a name perspective.

Now I just need to see the integrated version if that is the plan. Although wont that make it difficult when deciding on were to place the 360 itself?

The 360 has background downloading to save on power so they could impliment something similar.
You can switch on your 360 with your wireless controller so it must have something that is always on waiting for an input.

You're right on this the same way you turn On the Xbox by pressing the guide button from your controller the same could be done by turn on your Xbox thru voice recognition via Natal.  Because both system (xbox and camera) has two independent power source the Xbox is in standby waiting for any input and like the controller the camera is also standing by for any given command to be sent to the console.

But I dont think background download has to do anything when the Xbox is standing by to be powered on.

If you have a download pending thats when background download comes into work after your Xbox is turn off to save power.

That's exactly what it is and I should have clarified my point a bit more. The 360 is able to do processing whilst in standby mode, background downloading, so if you was to have a phrase or even have it recognise your face or body shape when you walk in front of Natal it would need the xbox to recognise that unless Natal itself can be programmed with these "on" triggers.
