Forums - Nintendo - Red Steel 2 U.S. Sales at 50,000

I don't care, the game is great , and I am having fun with it.

I don't like Ubisoft, I think as a company they deserve to die, but this time they made a game I really enjoy playing.

Period.

If a vast majority of the gaming community prefer spending 25 bucks on flying horse in Wow, I can have fun with RS2.

Wii games just take a long time to sell

come back to the sales in 6 months...

look @ CoD MW Reflex....it sold crappy its first week, but now its dancing its way to a million.

The problem is that a lot of Wii games don't sell until price cuts. It'll probably be $20 in 6 months.

CoD is an exception, it should not be compared to how most 3rd party Wii games perform.

Wii games like Red Steel 2 thend to have long legs, add to that the critical reception and that it's bundled with a Wii Motion Plus and I think Red Steel 2 will do just fine

Sorry but I have to disagree with this.  Games like this USED to have legs on Wii.  They simply don't anymore.

Look at FFCC:CB or NMH2 for recent examples (or Dead Space or any other recent 'core' release) they sell poorly at first and then drop like a rock.    Good casual titles continue to have legs though - look at Just Dance.  T vs C may be the only exception here and I'm not sure it's much of one.  It should break 250k though.

The audience for this type of game has largely moved on to HD and the remaining audience either doesn't care about it, won't settle for a half game (no online/multiplayer) or like me, will wait for the price drop because we're not so 'core' we need it day one.

When RE4 has sitting pretty at 15k every week it had zero competition (until NMH) and was one of the cheapest Wii games at the time. Now there's a lot of 'core' titles to choose from on shelves starting from $20.  Not much compared to HD systems, but more than enough for the small 'core' left on Wii.

And yes CoD:MWR sells well.  But it's CoD! And compared to HD versions it still sells like crap.   With that as the standard, the only other 'core' game I'd expect to make 1m sales on Wii now is GTA (should it ever happen).

Oh wow, let's move the goal posts, let's discount any game that could disprove what we say (Tatusnoko doing very well for this type of game thank you, Reflex being a two year old port of a game that is already available at discount on the HD and with 0 advertising doing very well thank you), and add any game that may  prove our point no matter if the game was either considered crap by most of the series fans (FFCB) or had 0 advertising (NMH2) or had 0 advertising and was the wrong genre at the wrong time to boot (Extraction).

If MH TRi sells 50k first month NPD I will conceed you are correct. But both you and I know it will do more than that, so what will be your excuse? That it's getting an advertising campaign?

Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Anticipating: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Mario Kart 7, Rayman Origins, Zelda SS, Crush3D, Tales of the Abyss 3DS, MGS:Snake Eater 3DS, RE:Revelations, Time Travellers, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH TriG, DQ Monsters, Heroes of Ruin

My take is this - I believe a lot of the core audience on Wii owns another system, so Wii's core titles have to compete with titles on the other platforms, and this is what determines whether they will succeed or not. So why is Reflex doing well, despite being a 2 year old port of a game already available at discount on other platforms? Because people wanted to experience what they saw as a great game but with the Wii controls. And why did Extraction not do as well? Because of 0 advertising and being in the wrong genre.

the game should be able to crawl its way to Ubisoft's 500k prediction, and it should receive a slight holiday boost that will help it reach that level.

I also think it could reach Ubisoft's expectation of 500k, but am not so sure about a holiday boost, that's too far away and there will be lots and lots of great new games by then that might make people forget RS2... SO I agree on the legs potential, just not the holiday boost.

If this game had some form of multiplayer it would have at least sold 100,000 more copies.

Obiously there is no way to prove it but I also feel that multiplayer would have gotten much more sales (I don't think 100k more for those 12 days, but easily 25k or even 50k more), and would have helped especially in the legs department, though we don't know yet how good or bad this one will do as it is as far as legs.

Tough call.
The game got ads, but yet there are some conflicting opinions as to whether it is actually good or not. It has become FPS standard to have multiplayer nowadays, and only the best of the best can really pull away in terms of sales without it. They would usually need brand name in order to do so, and Red Steel doesn't exactly have that......

I don't want to make any excuses for the title though. It is at 110k now, lets see how things go over several months.

Monster Hunter has a (relatively) small but enthusiastic following outside of Japan.  I know a couple people buying Wii just for MH3 so without doubt it'll do better than RS2.   But then MH3 is a hell of a lot better game than RS2 simply because it doesn't skimp on anything.  Full single player, and massive online with unlimited gameplay with a ton of variety.   And yes, of course advertising should help but then FFCC had advertising and so did Madworld for all the good it did them so I don't count it for much.   Not so sure about legs on this though.

I think CoDMWR sells well because if you own a Wii and you want a FPS it is the one to own.   I suspect most Wii owners are happy with one definitive game of a genre and not inclined to buy endless FPS like HD consoles owners.   Conduit 2 has it's work cut out for it.  I doubt many multiconsole owners play CoDMWR on Wii but would love to see stats proving me wrong.  According to VGC it was outsold by the bargain bin CoD3 last week.   Not exactly great legs.

As for T vs C, that's an interesting one.   I love the game and I'm not very 'core'.  It's easy, accessible and fun much like Brawl.  It's a really good match for the Wii audience plus it has online and you can play it with a friend which is a major reason people own Wiis.   The Vs series also has a loyal following.   I definitely can see multiconsole owners picking up TvsC on Wii because it's not on HD and it's full featured.   Still, it's not a big seller by any standard.    Regardless where is it on the Top 200?   Didn't see it.   We're talking legs here, and I'm sure TvsC will reappear after some price cuts but legs at bargain prices aren't all that appealing to developers (but they'll take it all the same).

I don't think I'm moving any goal posts.  I think you're right.  The 'core' Wii owners are almost all multiconsole owners so for a 'core' Wii game to sell big it's got to be better than anything on the HD consoles that month.  MH3 just might be but RS2 certainly wasn't.
