God of War seems to of been too much for my PS3, while I was kicking ass with Kratos it just turned it's self off and refuses to turn back on again (it starts up for a couple of seconds, beeps and turns off - YLOD).  It was the old skool 60GB model, and had been working fine up until now.  Damn you Kratos!!

Does anyone know if Sony replaces/fixes PS3s that are 3yrs old?  And how do I contact them?  I can't seem to find a UK phone number.

Call this number to see what Sony can do first  08705 99 88 77

Here's how to rip out your hard drive

Then get one of these

Excellent, Thanks dude.  I'll probably buy a slim, but I've just been looking at this guide:  http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2376     I might give it a go tomorrow (I've got nothing to lose!)

And at least I know I can get my Save data now!  Cheers!

Buddy of mine tried one of those and it did do a temp fix.

Hopefully it works out, good luck

phone them up, pay a lot (because its a 60gb they charge you extra)[was $200 canadian for me]. then they reformat your hard drive before they return it so all your saves are lost.

Wow, Kratos is even more of a badass than I originally thought.  He now kills PS3s!  Most characters only have power to kill people in their gaming world.

Anyhow, good luck sorting this out.

Cheers dude.   I guess if anyone was gonna kill my PS3, I'm glad it was Kratos!

Well Cole from infamous killed my first one

Batman Killed my Second

and Zombies got my third

so far I'm keeping Kratos away from my fourth

Haha, 3 PS3s?  Brutal!!  Maybe you should stick to less violent games!

Before you go off buying that HDD reader, please know that you won't be able to get your game saves.

The HDD is encrypted, and each encryption key is unique to each PS3.  So you can't stick your current HDD in a new PS3 and use it, it will ask you to reformat it.

There is basically no way to save your savegames unless you can turn your PS3 on somehow.  Even then, you will be limited to the savegames that are unlocked.  Most PS3 savegames are now locked though, to prevent people from getting trophies unfairly.

Long story short, consider your gamesaves as lost.

Awww fuckety fuck fuck fuck!  I hadn't thought of that.   So my only chance is fixing it.  There's a data transfes feature on the PS3 though isn't there? for transfering all your data from your ols PS3 to a new one?  If I buy a slim and get my phat up and running, then wouldn't that work?

I don't care about th GOWIII save, I'll happily play that again.  It's the ones that take ages to unlock all the features (rock band, Guitar hero, tiger woods, Need for speed shift, etc.) that I can't be assed completing again!

Unfortunately, it'll still only transfer unlocked savegames.  And I think the backup option will only transfer locked savegames to the same PS3 (if you are upgrading your PS3).  I'm not sure which of the ones you listed have unlocked saves, but chances are that if the game has trophies, it's locked.  Sorry.

My 60GB died a couple weeks ago. Instead of paying $150 I opted to buy the Slim. Luckily I took my GoWIII disc out and played Red Faction: Guerilla when it YLOD lol. I still plan to fix or send it in eventually:)

P.S. Your saves are forever lost unless you fix it yourself since each HDD is bound to each motherboard.

So they've locked the game-saves so that people don't cheat to get trophies?  That's a bit crap!  Trophies are good, but there's no actual monetary value to them!  If people cheat to get trophies then so what?  Aaaaaaaargh! Gits!!!

Yeah, it sucks.  I wish Sony did a better job with their savegame system, and tied them down to your individual profile rather than your system.

Hell yeah, I wouldn't be too bothered about the death of my PS3 if I hadn't lost all that data!

There are a fair few companies which charge less than Sony, and give you the same console back.

Console Doctor comes to mind.
