Forums - Gaming - success or failure (the double standered in gaming)

The point of the facts post was to see how many people would post facts. I even showed that if one game is a failure (L.B.P.) because of how many units it didn't sale. others like (halo3, uncharted2, and M.W.2) could be looked at as failures to. It just might be based on the popularity and public opinion of a game rather than how mutch said game sold but wouldn't it be a success because it made a profit? If you want to say success is all in how you see it then all the points listed in the facts thread would be true instead of some of them being objective opinions. But what i don't get is why L.B.P. is a failure with 3m units sold but other's like uncharted1-2, resistance1, and others that havn't sold 4m units are said to be successful? And it seems as if the ps3 seems to be the biggest target when it comes to this type of attack. It was once said that if a game sales 1m it's a success. Even heavyrain is said to be a success with just over 1m sold and end of yr projected sales to be 1.5m. Hell demon soul's hasn't even sold 1m yet and its a success. So why the double standard. Is GRAW a failure because it didn't sale halo numbers. Is S.M.G a failure because it didn't sale wii sports or fit numbers. And then we have the xb360 witch was first in the war but now in second. Last gen i was a gamecube fan and bought a ps2.! Now this gen im a ps3, wii, pc fan and have consisdered once or twice buying a used 360? (I will only do it if they release a new killer instinct) It should be called killer instinct evolution. Ok maybe not!

I made a thread about Super Mario Galaxy being a failure for not selling 10m copies. First party games have to be held to a different standard, because just making a profit is not enough.

didn't think about it that way. makes me think.

success is in the eye of the beholder. In the eyes of a fanboy, anything under 5mil fails, in the eyes of a realist, anything over 1mil = win, everything else is a bonus.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Obviously, games must be considered individually in a game by game basis. Some may profit at 300k, while everyone clamors for 1 million, even if that isn't necessary. Games which have been in development for 5 years like Red Dead Redemption need that 5 million. Sequels are also an indicator of success from ther publisher/developer's eyes.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

impresive.

Any argument that halo 3 was a failure is a pretty futile argument as it massively outsold halo 2, had great reviews and until recently was the most played xbl game for years.

Success can be defined in different ways, a game can be a critical success, commercial (eg it made a great return on investment, not just a slight profit) or it can flop compared to expectations. You can be successful in some ways and unsuccessful in others.

LBP didn't flop at selling software, but it was supposed to attract a new crowd of gamers to the PS3, but the hardware bump didn't show that at all when it was released (and in the following weeks).
MGS4 was waaay more effective in that way.
