Both games do anti-aliasing, some games need more anti-aliasing than others. More anti-aliasing is needed when there are more aliasing issues within the game. It's a technique used to solve problems, it's not like having no anti-aliasing is a problem per se.

You can't fully tell from the youtube footage, but it could be Alan Wake runs in sub-HD, the lower the native rendering resolution usually the more AA techniques are required to solve aliasing issues.

Running in sub-HD actually isn't per se a bad thing for this game, the textures aren't high quality, so there are less benefits from rendering in HD. Various HD games could do with sub-HD rendering actually because of this. It will improve framerates, but on the other hand requires more Anti-aliasing. It's a trade off in either direction, if you have high quality assets a dev may prefer to render in HD with less anti-aliasing (to show off in full detail), if you have low quality assets you may better opt for sub-HD rendering with some more anti-aliasing.

Of course Halo 3 is sub-HD without any anti-aliasing and that shows....

You can not compare an effect to a genre. I never said there was anything bad about using lighting effects, but when the game constantly tries to blind me it becomes a problem. The lighting is overdone to the point being a distration; the developers simply needed to tone it down.

Besides, I would not exactly say they are depending on it so much as showing off.

it's a shame it's not on pc i agree but like cgi suggested i'll be getting a 360 JUST for this game. 

prob not the best idea to get a console for just 1 game but hopefully alan wake will make me more open to other 360 games.

But I don't want to crap on about getting a 360. alan wake is still another month away. 

The game really looks good. I just love the atmosphere the game seems to ooze (reminds me of re4). Just please, please, don't be an 8 hour long game lol

well thats like uncharted lighting looks average if compared to alan wakes lighting. alan wake charecter models look above average but not as good as uncharted 2 but uncharted lightign looks above average but not as good as alan wakes lighting.

Not really.

Uncharted 2 sports better HDR, also does screen space ambient occlusion and casts impressive shadows (like on peddles on the ground).

Not good pictures, but just for illustration:

Alan Wake is just very dark and thus more emphasis on lighting (possibly throughout the entire game). Uncharted 2 provides mostly very colorful and bright vibrant environments.

Seriously though, if you have played Uncharted 2 , you will know that the game just shines all the way through. I just can't complain and the pictures above doesn't do the game justice, but it sure does proove Mike B & Prophecy's point.

Alan wake is REALLY dark from what we saw and there is a daylight video, but the game just does not look Uncharted 2 good. I can say it's better than Gears 2 (Which is the best graphic on the X360 I've seen [Yet to play Mass Effect 2]) but I wouldn't compare it to Uncharted 2 / GoW 3 and for the record, Uncharted 2 actually does look better than God of War 3 ..aside from Kratos. That guy is amazingly done. He's bald and doesn't really wear much clothing, but they got his body spot on xD.

 

Honestly same goes for Killzone 2 but after playing U2 and GoW3, the game does not look as awesome to me xD.
