Forums - Sony - Modnation Racers IGN Video Preview: Is it a Mario Kart Killer?

I wonder about all the other "Killers" in this industry?: You know Crash Bandicoot (long forgotten and irrelevant these days), Little Big Planet (Good game but not even the half of NSMB sales), Killzone 2 (Ha ha), even Haze was called "Killer". I'm starting to think that adding "killer" to any game is like a curse for every new IP.

Yeah, were talking about quality not sales, you know, the reason we play games actually...

LBP had a better Meta than NSMB

Killzone 2 had 92 and Haze wasnt called a killer..

On Topic:

It will be a great game, and ill buy it if it gets good reviews

didnt like MK Wii that much, actually i found it pretty boring

Yeah we are talking about quality, not Metacritic scores.

I'd argue that LBP is a great game but it simply isn't a better platformer than NSMBWii.  For my mind whether MNR is a better game than MKWii is not important, it could be a worse game and still very worthy of purchase and I think that's the point alredofrolan is trying to make.  Comparisons with MKWii, the soon-to-be most popular full price game this gen, are unnecessary and if anything are inviting trouble.

Do we have to compare this to Mario Kart and bring about the wrath of fanboys? Can't this just be a good game on its own merits?

Nope.  It's going to kill Mario Kart badly in gameplay.  It's a shame that I only own a Wii and have to play that piece of crap known as Mario Kart.

Mario was killed in this way by Sackboy too.  It's such a shame...

Just because MNR might "kill" MK does not mean that your precious MK games sucks. In life, theres competition and comparison, something will always be killed by something else. And there is nothing wrong with that. Your sarcasm isn't really funny at all. You need some new jokes.

Whether you find me funny or not really doesn't matter.  Also, it doesn't really matter if you care for Mario Kart or not.  Everyone's entitled to their opinions.

The problem is that you ask if a first time game is going to "kill"  the gameplay in another series that has been around for a very long time and had it's gameplay copied several times (MNR isn't the first to do it).  When you ask these sorts of things, it leaves you open for criticism and sarcastic responses, funny or not.

Mario Kart Wii sucks anyway, boring tracks, dumbed down core gameplay for casuals... didn't it get like an 80 metascore?

It'd be a much fairer comparison if this was something like Mario Kart: Double Dash or MK: DS vs Modnation Racers.

My only fear for the game is that if it doesn't get the loading times sorted out, it's not going to do very well. With 3minute loading times not only will it get bad review scores, it's not going to be fun to play either so I doubt the creation community will pick up. However they said in the beta that the game was intended to run with optical support and not solely off the HDD so I guess I can assume load times will be at least ~halfed.

it's not going to be a mario kart killer. that's just absurd.

Oh brother.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

There are no "killers." That is just a stupid phrase that some boring people started saying while they were bored.

This...this is what you call a system mover. If Sony is going to release a special edition PS3 for this game, they will be snapped up faster than i can say cat in a hat.

Not for me no, I really don't need another Kart racer. MKWii is a fantastic game that is super deep and super replayable and most importantly, a load of fun. This may be a good or even great game, and if I get a chance to play it maybe at a friends or something I'll give it a whirl but mostly it's a kart racer, and I already have a fantastic one.

This thread reminded me that I still need to buy Mario Kart Wii.
