This generation in home console FF XIII became this week the best selling RPG toping Fable II which was holding the lead. The top before FF XIII were: Fable II, Elder Scroll IV Oblivion, Fallout III and all on the Xbox360 (a bit unexpected since Playstation is suppose to be the home of RPG). The numbers are:
FF XIII (PS3): 3.59 M
Fable II: 3.53 M
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion (Xbox360):
Fallout III (Xbox360):

In total sales FO3 is still ahead of FF13, ofcourse that will chance eventually. FF is just an incredibly powerful franchise, but wRPG are more popular in general hench Fable, Oblivion and Fallout being'closest to FF13 in sales. So if you want to buy a wRPG then you have more choice, if you want a JRPG you get a lot of average games and then FF13 so the choice is obvious. SO what I'm saying is you can't credit the sales to the greatness of the game (FF13) itself but to the franchise's power and the competition.

If you include PC, FO3 and Oblivion, they will probably have more than FF13 forever.
but there are good JRPG's Out Like Resonance of Fate, and Valkyria Chronicles. It's just RoF is extremly niche, which does =/= sales. And Valkyria Chronicles is SJRPG, but both of those were advertised by Sega, and Sega really sucks at advertising. And doing such things as releasing RoF at the same time as FFXIII was not very smart.
But this is off topic, but if I remember, before Elder Scrolls Morrowind on xbox. There were RPG's on PC, and RPG's on Consoles... I didn't hear JRPG used until PC RPG's started being on consoles. But I was a youngin' I coulda been oblivious
