It's not like a god of war fanatic went to the store and said "hmmm No PS3's, guess I will never buy the game now, might as well move on" It's "Hmmm, no Ps3's, i'll just come back next week". |
No, but there will be pleny of parents going to buy thier kids a new PS3 and a copy of God of War for thier birthdays or just a random gift for thier kids. They then see that there is no PS3, so instead they buy them a Wii, Xbox360, or a few games of the system they aleady have.

so you are saying GoWIII lost a few hundred copies at most right?
In your example it isn't too uncommon for the parents to tell the child what they were going to get, and then pick it up a week later when it is in stock. Or, the more common one is they buy everything ahead of time, so only those parents who waited until the last week possible would have had a problem. Heck, Nintendo did the buy a Wii in December get it in January program through gamestop one year, so we know parents will give their children rainchecks.
Thinking the hardware shortages caused 100-200k in lost sales is just wishful thinking. As stated earlier, almost all of the "missed" sales would just be moved into the later weeks. People know how to deal with items being out of stock, they don't just give up on a product unless it is out of stock for a long time, which the PS3 was not.
