Forums - General - Can a political party campaign too much?

So the story goes: Two political parties have essentially lost my vote in the past few days by campaigning too much.

It started a few days ago when I joined the Liberal Democrats Facebook fan page. I joined to tell someone off about making comparisons between the Conservatives party and the Nazis, the comparison was unjust and pretty shallow. I don't like the UK Conservatives much, but I would never deal a blow like that.

Anyway, back on track, because I joined the Liberal Democrats Facebook fan page I started receiving updates from them on my home page... None stop! Honestly, every half hour they came out with a new post detailing some policy or another. This lost my vote in two ways.

1. I hate my Facebook home page being filled with posts from the Liberal Democrats every other post. Sometimes my whole home page would look like it was the Liberal Democrat website. (This is not really a big deal as after two days of this I just hid them.)

2. They brought my attention to a few policies I severely disagreed with, which I didn't know they had. Without their persistent posting of news on my home page, I would have been unaware of these.

I was going to vote for the Liberal Democrats, but I think their persistent posting of policies and news put me off.

The second party that lost my vote came today, as I was travelling home from University. I noticed the Conservatives had hit places with campaign flyers and advertisements pretty hard. Along the main roads and on all the street lamps. Such a thing should come under littering laws, honestly. I know they will remove them later, but for now it is a complete eyesore. I wasn't particularly going to vote for them anyway because I disagree with a lot of their social policies and a couple of their economic policies, but this pretty much cemented the deal.

So there you have it, two parties may have lost my vote from over-campaigning. Do you think I am just a one off case? Or do you think this happens often, that over-campaigning can be a deterrent.

Yes, and since I keep hearing how political parties in the UK are trying to adapt Obama's campaign strategy, I expect you're going to find out just what too much campaigning really is.

That's what you get for using Facebook.

*Runs*

It's an annoying time, but what may deter you from choosing them will probably sway someone else towards it.

*Urgh* Tell me about it... And I hate the way that David Cameron has adopted Obama's slogan of "Change". Seriously, he says that word every ten fucking seconds when he's talking.

you aint seen nothing yet, watch the news or read the paper, everywhere you look, the 3 main partys are there pandering for your vote!

just out of curiosity (you dont have to answer if you dont want), what policies put you off voting for the Lib Dems?

I still dont know who to vote for, I was thinking of going Lib Dem, but I still dont like some of there policy's (Afghanistan, delaying abolition of Tuiton fees, chickening out of seperating church and state and more I cant recall off hand) only thing I know for sure is that I will NOT be voting for the main 2.

Well "slogans" like that make the average person SWOON over them. The people who think outside of political parties(aka not mindless zealots) are usually disgusted by empty talk like that as they SHOULD be. If they are copying Obama's campaign get ready for some REALLY REALLY annoying crap.

Not to turn this into a political debate, but I think their healthcare policy is a bit short sighted, as is their economic policy. They posted a few other things on Facebook I disagreed with.

I know the campaigning is going to get more extreme over the coming month, I'm not looking forward to it. At this rate I'm not going to side with the one I like best, just the one who annoys me the least.

Obama's slogan was *kind of* justified, at the time the USA needed a change in their politics, whether the change that was needed has been delivered is another topic.

But UK politicians (and I imagine nearly all politicians around the world) have copied Obama's extremely successful campaign, and the cheap copycat gimmicks just don't have the same effect, they're just annoying.

Let's hope you are right, it would be very annoying to see similiar behavior in politics from now on. If this type of campaigning works then just imagine what it's going to be like in 10-15 years.

fair enough, though I would just ignore the campaigning, you should only ever vote for the party you actually agree with most imo, or in my case, disagree with least...lol

you can look forward to thursdays leader debate too, lol, that should be a well orchestrated farce...
