I feel like most of the people in this thread didn't read the entire article and stopped short of where they mention that hackers have been a good thing for consumers and the videogame industry and that Sony was in a moral grey area for taking out Other OS.

Of course they didn't read the entire thing. Everyone knows that every single hackers is only in it for piracy and not about opening up game modding options, homebrew apps, adding console functionality, etc...

People seem to lump all hackers/modders into this "piracy" group and it is quite ignorant of them to do so.

or they think of them as enablers or accomplices.  They might not be the ones pirating the games (although some surly are) they are the ones who get past locks and open the doors.

I guess so are the people who sell guns or the department stores that sell kitchen knives.

Just because someone decides to use the opened system to commit piracy doesn't warrant anyone here labeling the original hacker as a thief or accomplice.

Back in the PS2 days there was a mod chip called "Crystal Chip". The creators did not endorse piracy and shipped all chips with firmware that only allowed for the use of homebrew because they locked out the use of backups and such.

It was open to the ability of custom firmwares though and we soon had custom CC firmware that allowed for all of those homebrew uses as well as opened up the ability to load backup discs.

Should we blame the Crystal team?

No, we should blame those who made the custom CC firmware.

Summary for all of you who dont feel like reading that:

"I am a hacker.

I am smarter than the rest.

People don't like me.

I will use my intellect to steal stuff because i'm angry and/or my self esteem is low.

I will claim that it is for the greater good, but in reality it is just me stealing from those that earn their money with work.

I am a thief."

- 80% of Hackers

That is such an intelligent way to express your side of the discussion.

well in the case of the crystal team they at least tried to make sure that those who entered the door they opend behaved properly many hackers don't do that.   You're more likely to get people to agree that some hackers are good instead of trying to get people to think only some hackers are bad.

Well it is pretty much impossible to make sure that those who enter the door refrain from coding CFW or programs that allow for backup loading, whether it be disc based, HDD based or USB based.

Me, I just want game mods and homebrew. PSP allowed for SNES/Genesis/NES/etc... with 2 player over infrared support. I would love to see if they could find some way of doing the same with PS3, only with them allowing it over the net. Would be pretty sweet.

Not to mention the custom themes and dymanic themes.

I hate hackers. The only good thing about them is that they bring me free games but aside from that they're just a big nuisance to society.
