Forums - PC - Finally getting a NEW Laptop! Suggestions Please (I am clueless about this)

@Darth

The turbo boost will accoring to notebookcheck push the processor to about 2.9 GHz. Wich is good.

To quote notebookcheck about the graphics card:
"This means the performance is sufficient for high details in nearly all DirectX 10 games (only Crysis and GTA4 are not fluently playable in high details - see gaming list below)."

"Shared Memory no"

So it should be able to run mass effect and it shouldn't have shared memory. Sounds good.

No Bluetooth is a shame, but it has HDMI and Wi-fi. Blu-ray and DVD rewriter is really nice. Everything seems fine on the feature front.

All Acer laptops also come with a 1 or 2 year warranty I believe.

I'd say it's a good laptop.

I found a acer one that might be good

@all

I found this acer one, is it any good? (well it will be able to play Mass Effect 2!)

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-5942g-04287940-pdt.html

Here are the specs

Processor Intel® Core™ i5-520M Processor
- 2.4 GHz
- 2.5 GT/s DMI
- 3 MB Smart Cache
Operating System Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
RAM - 4 GB
Graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650
Screen type TFT wide screen
Screen resolution - WXGA
- 1366 x 768 pixels
Screen size 15.6"
Hard drive 640 GB SATA
Optical disk drive Combined Blu-ray/dual-layer SuperMulti DVD rewriter

Pretty good. The graphics card will run crysis on high with 25-30 frames per second which is pretty good.

I like you got HD5xxx, DX11 FTW lol!!!        Just not sure about the i5 processor, would be recommended to go for i7 if possible but I think it's pretty good for the price (esp you have HDMI and bluray)

So overall, this is a good one.

Darth, check this one out

Yes, definitely.

That one looks very good Darth. Just remember to take out the battery when you have it plugged in on full charge as you don't want to damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time.

Tease.

@all

thanks for the comments on the acer one I might actually go with it

@Fab_GS

That one looks great too, and its got an i7 processor, but its costlier by £327 :(

@Squilliam

oh I didn't know batteries got damaged like that, thanks for the advice!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I recently purchased an ASUS G73J and have nothing but praise for it so far and it may fit the mould for your future proof-ness.

Core i7 2.8 Turbo
ATi HD 5870 1GB DDR5
8GB DDR3
1TB 2x 500GB 7200rpm
17.3" Full HD 1920x1080

This retails for ~$2400 AUD, so it should be within budget dealing in pounds.

Although a different strategy may be to buy something low to mid-range budget with anticipation of replacing it sooner (2 years), than forking out more cash and expecting it to last the distance.

Also worth taking into consideration is the manufacturer's warranty service, I find that HP and IBM branded laptops have a global next-day repair service, whereas most others require you to do the RRoD procedure and buy a coffin etc. and wait 2 weeks, which may be downtime you can't afford.

like other people mentioned, I would go with an Alienware, not sure what you get for warranty, but since they are owned by Dell, I would think you could get the same warranties (Basically with Dell if ANYTHING happens to it it is covered.. except fire..) So in 3 years accidently "drop it" and get a new laptop lol
