Hell no i dont agree, WRPGs are horrible. I played Oblivion which everyone was raving about and was one of the worst games ive played in my life.

Man, what a trainwreck of a post (and opinion!) In Kingdom Hearts 2 there is a part with 1,000 enemies on the screen, IN THE SAME TIME, and the game still runs at 60 frames per second. Does that make it the best RPG ever? no.
NOW, for the rest of the thread: It's funny to see the pepole in both camps, most of the WRPG lovers didn't play a single game before this generations, almost all of the rest didn't play a game that's earlier than KotOR, and it's funny because almot all of this genre's classics are from before then (Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1+2, Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate 2). And JRPG lovers - it's funny how pepole bring FFXIII as a good example, why don't you guys go and play the REALLY good games, games who aren't part of the FF series, now part of DQ, aren't part of KH, Chrono Trigger or Persona... |
Dunno about you but threads like these make me feel old... I'm only 25!

How does it focus more on dialougue and Interaction in relation to games like Planescape: Torment or Fallout 1 and 2? In Earlier WRPGs it's completely possible (if very difficult) to finish the game without killing anybody at all completely through dialogue, something that is not possible in Mass Effect. |
Dialogue was a big part of the games in ME2, but it was limited to your immediate crew. It pushed for a greater emotional investment from players, some of which was not possible in older games due to tech limitations. The emphasis was far more on the individual story's of your party and required you to become more invested than I would in Fallout 1 & 2... arguable in Planescape because of the quality of nameless one's story.
Here we go again...another WRPG is better than JRPG thread...
As usual, I'm just going to say that there's good games in both genres. And both genres are guilty of being 'cliche'. While there's games in both genres that break those cliches.
And, like I always bring up, people should look for games that bridge the gap between the genres. Such as Dragon Quest which has many of the concepts and elements WRPG fans claim are superior (emphasis on exploration, character customization, 'you are the hero', etc) while still being a JRPG and evolving and breaking various cliches in that genre.
And I'm sorry to say, but if you think that WRPGs are better than JRPGs simply because you've played a few WRPGs this gen like Mass Effect or Dragon Age or if you think that JRPGs are 'inferior' because all you've played is Final Fantasy or Tales, then you need to stop talking.
