Forums - Gaming - Well JRPGs this gen have finally done it, I'm now playing SNES JRPGs again

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but the snes had some awesome RPG's.

Geeh, from what i read (here and other forums), FFXIII isn't really loved. I myself haven't played it yet. So i can't say.

I personally never gave up SNES RPGs. I'm still buying them, still playing them. For me personally, it was the pinnacle of RPGs. Sure, there are some good ones from PS1 and onward, but the overall quality wasn't as high.

Oh, and dtewi, yes, I would take FF1 over the current gen RPGs. I'd also take FF1 over any of the PS1 or later FF games.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

Yes.

I'm playing Lunar: SSSC now, and I quite enjoy it.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

Well Nostalgia wouldn't make games you never played before better, for me that would be Secret of Evermore, its not even remotely similar to Secret of Mana other than the top down view and basics of the battle system, since magic and such was changed.

I think its pretty telling when one of the best JRPGs this gen is a of an SNES JRPG on the DS. I speak of course of Dragon Quest V.

But that fact notwithstanding, there's plenty of good JRPGs this gen. They're just mostly on DS.  Not to say the SNES didn't have them as well, because of course it had some of the best.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Get Lufia 2. Seriously, you're doing a disfavour to yourself if you don't play Lufia 2

But make sure you play the second one before the first, since Lufia 2 is where the actual story really begins, as it's a prequel for Lufia.

Yeah, I might, they're actually had a video of the remake for the DS, I posted it up as news, everyone said it was pretty good, and I'll pick up the remake if it hits the states.

As I stated in the OP the handhelds have good JRPGs, I love the JRPGs on the handheld, but I also like leaning back in my chair, with as soda or something and just playing an RPG on my TV, usually if you see me playing my handheld its always me hunched over staring at the screen, and you know that's rather uncomfortable lol.  The only RPGs to give me a satisfied feeling while playing are Demons Souls, Fallout 3, (Two JRPGs I forgot about) Lost Odyssey, and FFIV The After Years.

I just recently picked up Lufia myself. Can't wait to play it.

Also JRPG this generation has caused me to go to DS only. Seriously JRPGs this generation aren't great....

I agree this genration is worst for jrpg;s. The only one tht is a classic ffxiii. It gave me the feeling tht ff7 and 8 did (my favorite rpg's) and i really loved it. But apart from that what else is there? Lost oddesy was good, tales of vesperia was good.

The rest square-enix have made is crap and ffxiii took 7 years to make, so will I have to wait for 7 more years for the next good jrpg? Its stupid, I remember ps1 days when FF's used to come every year and we used to get amazing jrpg's from everyone.

What went so wrong?
