Forums - Gaming - Well JRPGs this gen have finally done it, I'm now playing SNES JRPGs again

Play FFI and then tell me you don't want to stay in this gen.

I have, while it had basic errors like not telling you where you needed to go or who you needed to talk to, it was very much a better JRPG especially for its time.  You make a team of your choosing, which all effects how your battle tactics will have to play out, you're the warriors of light having to destroy the evil that threatens the world and even got a pretty cool twist at the end, so really I wouldn't mind going back every now and again.

Sadly enough, I agree. God knows what has happened. But me too I went back to playing old JRPGs like Legend of Dragoon and FFVII. However, I haven't played FFXIII, but I will take your word for it. Still, I will play it when I get the time, afterall, it was one of the most anticipated JRPGs this gen.

It all depends on the game. The biggest problem, I think, comes from the slow failure of SE games. They have been on a slow downward slope for quite a while now, and consequently the JRPG arena has suffered greatly. Both from losing those games, and from creating a lower standard for other companies to live up to. Still there have been a handful of good RPGs this gen. There is just a dry spell now due to no one wanting to compete with FFXIII.

@dtewi
I'd take FF1 over any Final Fantasy released during the PS2 era or later. Of course FF1 is from the NES era so entirely outside of what he is talking about.

I think I will do something similar. FFXIII was a so bad that I think its about time I play some of the classic Final Fantasy just to remind myself how good the series can be. Its been a couple years since I've played Final Fantasy Tactics. I think its about time to give that another play through. I also need to get around to playing FFIV, I assume I can pick it up for the DS?

Playing Final Fantasy Tactics A2 now, getting all quests, jobs, weapons, etc. So much fun! Can't get myself to finishing FFXIII , boy SE dissapointed me yet again

PS: The only RPG (not JRPG) that has not dissapointed me this gen (excluding portables) is Demon's Souls. I platinumed this game once, lost all my data, thinking about doing it all over again!

Get Lufia 2. Seriously, you're doing a disfavour to yourself if you don't play Lufia 2

But make sure you play the second one before the first, since Lufia 2 is where the actual story really begins, as it's a prequel for Lufia.

RPGs and a few other genres really got perfected during the SNES era. The graphics and sound were much better than anything before, but not to the point where they had to reinvent everything for the 3rd dimension, FMVs weren't possible yet, and budgets weren't so high they couldn't afford to do a single interesting thing. Riskier costs lead to less risky game design.

I wish they'd release Final Fantasy Gaiden in the west, but I don't really have time for RPGs nowadays. I'm dabbling with Infinite Space right now.

I spent most of last year playing Chrono Trigger almost daily on the bus. Awesome game, the current gen offerings bored me (tho crisis core was pretty amazing too)!

Do you take your DS with you when you go to work? I get to work 1/2 hour early and sit at the coffee shop downstairs and play. It's taken me forever but I've gone through Chrono Trigger, FFIV, Nostalgia and am currently doing FFIII right now this way. It's actually a nice way to play games like this, especially if level grinding is neccessary since there is a time-limit. I really love my DS!

Tales of Symphonia 2 and Tales of Vesperia are great fun JRPG games that should not be missed if you enjoy SNES games! They are not graphically pleasing games, but they are just so much fun to play!!
