It all depends on the game. The biggest problem, I think, comes from the slow failure of SE games. They have been on a slow downward slope for quite a while now, and consequently the JRPG arena has suffered greatly. Both from losing those games, and from creating a lower standard for other companies to live up to. Still there have been a handful of good RPGs this gen. There is just a dry spell now due to no one wanting to compete with FFXIII.

I'd take FF1 over any Final Fantasy released during the PS2 era or later. Of course FF1 is from the NES era so entirely outside of what he is talking about.
