I voted no, movie ticket prices are 1 thing but buying a 3d tv and a Ps3 + extra glasses just to watch avatar doesn't seem reasonable.

Well, 3D is the new trend in the movie industry. You can see that looking at all the movies turning 3D latelly. People are bound to want to watch the movies like they do in the cinema, if the tech is avaible. Like you said, the investment is heavy, but Avatar could be the last straw to motivate the adoption. I'm asking about Avatar because of it's success and because it was made from the beggining aiming for 3D tech, unlike all the other movies in 3D that will be released in the next 2 years. Of course, it'll not have the same impact that it would if the PS3 3d + TV was released now, with the movie DVD and normal Bluray.  And don't forget 3D gaming, wich could add to the reasons to make the purchase.

AVATAR will not be 3D on Blu ray.

5 bucks says it will by the end of 2010...

It won't be 3d at launch cause it comes out April 22. Only 3D bluray stuff available by then are by Samsung. However once 3D tech gets some penetration from all manufacturers you will see Avatar 3D. Christmass 2010 is my guess...

I thought 3D Avatar is planned for next year. Bare bone release on 04/22, multiple disc special edition DVDs with extra for Christmas then 3D Blu-ray version next year. Triple dip  of the release.

You are probably right. I dont know the exact time frame... but we will see Avatar 3D. It may not boos PS3 sales though if it comes out in 2011

People need to own 3D TV's for the feature to become a success and 3D TV's aren't going to become the norm for a good long while, especially since you have to deal with the glasses.

So no.

It works in the theaters though I imagine people are going to get past the gimmick soon enough since people really don't like paying $20 for a movie ticket but at home it just isn't in any way at convenient, accessable, or even much variety (no TV at all, only a limited selection of movies).

-edit-

Also, I wouldn't expect Avatar to tear up the movie sales.  It was a huge movie, but that was really only hype.  There are the stupid people that fell in love with Pandora and I'm sure they'll buy the movie, but beyond that it should only do slightly better than normal sales.

The problem is still price though.

The 3D quality in Avatar was great and there are a few other movies that do 3D great, but most are just kind of tacked on and that is what most will continue to do.  Because of that, 3D won'y be much more than a gimmick that just kind of kills itself.  When standard movie tickets move to $20 a piece, that extra $3 isn't going to be worth it when you're already spending $60+ on tickets alone for a family of three.

Beyond that, you then have to get the people to buy a 3D TV.  There are only a handful of movies that support 3D and, what, 2 games?  That isn't nearly enough to justify a purchase for anyone except tech geeks and people with too much money to spend.  Until 3D becomes the norm at home, and that means movies and TV and games, 3D isn't going to be anything but a fun fancy for the above people.

Avatar isn't going to push that, the thing that pushes it is when most every movie comes out in 3D and Avatar quality 3D.  Rational people aren't going to spend $3000+ just to watch Avatar like they did in the theaters.

Um what? Every 3D TV offers the highest and best screen you can have with an HD TV today.. they offer 240HZ, true 1080P resolutions.. they are absolutely some of the best HD tv's you can buy, in addition to the fact they are 3D tvs. So you can have your normal amazing HD TV, and the 3D in addition to it.

mM

I'll say yes - a little bit - as it's hard to imagine it's going to hurt the PS3.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I didn't think it was a bad movie, I just don't think it was the biggest movie of all time.  The effects were phenominal, but beyond that, meh.

If the movie had swept the awards like people thought it would, I would have a different outlook, but it didn't so my outlook remains good movie sales, nothing too memorable.

You can wtch 3D on many projectors, some of which are less than 1000 bucks. Also, you can watch it on 4 computer monitors with Nvidia 3D vision and a PC. Also, you can watch it on Mitsubishis DLP televisions which are 1000 bucks for 65 inch screen...

I am not saying that everyone will buy in to 3D but there is a way and it isn't as expensive if one does some research.

I think you misunderstood me.  I mean there are almost no 3D movies or games at home and there are 3D TV shows at home.  You still get a brilliant TV that can do everything else, but people that are actually paying attention to what they buy will notice they can get the exact same thing minus the 3D for much cheaper.
