People need to own 3D TV's for the feature to become a success and 3D TV's aren't going to become the norm for a good long while, especially since you have to deal with the glasses.

So no.

It works in the theaters though I imagine people are going to get past the gimmick soon enough since people really don't like paying $20 for a movie ticket but at home it just isn't in any way at convenient, accessable, or even much variety (no TV at all, only a limited selection of movies).

Also, I wouldn't expect Avatar to tear up the movie sales.  It was a huge movie, but that was really only hype.  There are the stupid people that fell in love with Pandora and I'm sure they'll buy the movie, but beyond that it should only do slightly better than normal sales.
