MacBooks, and now the iPad, are just pointless.

Just an FYI. The Macbook Pro 17" I have, I got almost 4 years ago. I got it to run Windows. The reason I bought it:

  • it's mettle
  • it's 1 inch thick
  • It runs 4 hours on battery
  • It has a 1680x1050 screen
  • It has a backlight keyboard
  • It has a webcam
  • It has a 256Meg video card
  • it was rated the fastest Windows laptop on the market by PC Magazine.

Name a laptop 4 years ago that even comes close to this thing. From someone who looked at everything on the market, I can tell you one did not exist.

A product like that 4 years ago... Must have cost over 2.5k...

Just so you know, I am a Microsoft .NET Developer. I have a VS Ultimate MSDN account. This means anything Microsoft makes, I get. I have no issue with them. I look at tools objectively, and buy what's best.

I do not care about companies. Only products.

Yeah, sorry, ignore that last post by me.  It was a quick judgement and I assumed you were the type that only used Apple related products.  That was my bad.

As for the iPad, I guess I have the same same reason not to get one as you have for not getting a Netbook.  I already have a laptop, a gaming desktop, a TV with widgets that can access internet stuff, a 360, PS3, and a Motorola Droid that I can use to do some quick internet search, note jotting, app browsing, or just some quick task.  So for me I have a device that would cover anything an iPad could do (other than Apple exclusive apps), and it would just collect dust if I owned one.

No worries :)

And yea, if I could get used to my tiny screen on my phone to brows the web or watch a movie while away, I would not have much of a use for it. For my personally. I like the phones for "need to look something up quick" kind of thing, but for deliberate web usage, I don't reach for my phone.

And yes. It cost 2.7K. The closest other thing I could find was a dell specced less for over 3K.

Times have changed however, and while I love the new ones, I can't justify the 2.5K when there are HP's out there for half the price and capable. If this one failed on me now, I would not replace it with an Apple product.

I think I've find my polar opposite in mafoo. I don't like netbooks at all when compared to laptops, but i still think they hold the slimmest advantage over the current ipad. The next version of the ipad, however, would probably tip my favor the other way.

Why is that?

What do you think the next one will have, that will change your mind?

I like the idea of the ipad, but naturally I'm not going to buy a first generation product. I will probably trade in my powerbook when they improve upon the ipad.

I'd like to see a slightly bigger screen, better on screen typing, multitasking, and a slightly lower price personally.

I was initially quite a skeptic of the iPad. However seeing it in video makes me realise it gives a first class user experience and it fits the overall useage model for technology nowadays which is often media consumption rather than interaction.

Theres no real reason that I can see which ought to draw people to really complain about it. Its a first class citizen in what it does and nothing else really fits quite into the same category. Sure on a price vs component comparison it may fail next to highly competitive products, however many people see the value in it so I hope they enjoy it.

Tease.

This guy has a good video of the two side my side.

I have used both now, and I have to say, the iPad is a much better device.

This video was incredibly bias. I could make a video as well showing everything Netbook does better. A few things that come to mind are being able to use multiple programs at once, superior software options, visiting websites with Flash, watching movies and listening to music without codec limitations, etc.

Also, that Netbook was crap. An Acer One can stream YouTube movies much smoother and they are only about $250.

In due time PC manufactures will start developing affordable tablet computers similar in design as the iPad. I'd rather wait for that.

Not sure how the typing on a touch screen could get better. They might figure something out. I expect the last two. Price and Multitasking, to be taken care on this year.

Yea. There are parts of the video that i don't agree with. Mostly the typing. I think most people are so excited about the typing on the iPad, because it's far better then expected, but still not as good as a real keyboard.

But what it does show, is just how clunky a netbook is when browsing the web compared to a touch device. And you can't see it in that video, but the screen on the iPad is far better then any netbook I have seen.

What I like about it, is if money was not an object, and you could pick any device you can think of when you want to do something. For example "play Crysis", you would pick a very powerful PC. If it was "make a movie" you might pick a Mac Pro with Final Cut on it.

I can not think is a single thing, where I would pick a netbook if every option was available for me. If I wanted to browse the web in front of my TV, or watch a movie on a plane. The best device on the market for those actions, for me anyway, is the iPad. That means for those tasks (and there are more then just those two), because this device exists, I can now do those task better then I could ever before. It knows no equal in those few areas.

Improved tools to improve my lifestyle is always exciting to me. I expect (and hope) android tablets in the future surpass the iPad. How great would that be? :)

I'm not a fan of Apple products, but I still very much appreciate the strives in interface and ease of use that they are pushing. I'm also really looking forward to the day I find a tablet that is for me (I still haven't found the phone for me though, so it might take a while ).

Right now, I have my sights set on Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 (though hell will freeze over before I get the first generation of that thing.). I just love the idea!
