Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 Sales in Uk down 82% week 2....

By supplying such a large number of units for launch Sony effectively satisfied the initial launch demand for the system; typically, because of short supply, this takes months to do on most systems. Now, the current sales are (probably) still elevated due to people who became interested because of all the hoopla of the launch so in a few weeks/month we will see what the demand for the PS3 (at its current price with its current game list) really is.

It's a battle of attrition for Sony now. We will have to see if the PS3 is really in it for the long run and if Sony can maintain sales by whatever means.

Good to see this site is still going

30K a week in the UK is actually pretty fantastic.  The UK is one place where Sony has absolutely notihng to complain about, and little to worry about.  The UK may be the biggest place for video gaming in Europe, but the entire continent (and more) is only responsible for as many sales as the US.  Japan probably spends twice as much or more on video games every year (likely much more, really), for Sony to sell as many consoles in a week in the UK as the do in a week in Japan is good.  The question is how much of that can they maintain.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

i was expecting a drop yes. say around 50%

but not a plummet.

82% is a plummet.

It's a post-launch drop - no different really to what was expected. Typical weekly sales in the uk (aside from DS) are ~25k .

Yeah, but you're basing your figures on "typical" consoles. The PS3 is not typical.

While MS or Nintendo were counting on the 20 millions owners of their old gens for the launch of their Next Gen, Sony can count on 110 millions of PS2 owners. You would expect very high figures, not only the first WE, but also the next ones.

you are right its not typical, its a $600 console.

and majority of those sales came later in the consoel life... not in the first year.

PS owners did not rush to the store and buy a 100 million PS2 in the first year now did they.

They didn't buy 100 Million the first day, but in Europe the PS2 launched in late November 2000 and had sold 2.85 Million consoles by March 31st 2001; by the time the Gamecube launched in Japan on September of 2001 the PS2 had already sold 20 Million consoles worldwide.

220k units were shipped. 165k sold week 1, leaving 55k. Just how many did people expect to sell? Best case scenario unless they shipped more is a 67% drop, but even without any potential supply issues, nothing moves 165k in a couple days for very long. On the software side, Resistance and Motorstorm are still at #2 and 3.

From what I understand, there are still plenty of units around - so yes, extra units have been shipped in.

This is completely predictable, and expected. There was huge pent-up demand, it all got released at once - and you will see sales drop significantly to almost US/Japan levels in the next 2 weeks.

Re: Software - looks like many people with PS3's (20%?) went out to but another game, the other sales come from the new hardware units sold. Again, it needs a couple more weeks to stabalise.

The ball is now *firmly* in Sony's court, to ensure that this momentum isn't lost - a new, BIG, title release wouldn't hurt...

(is there anything coming out until LAIR?)

ioi, Do you know how many 360s are sold per week in the UK?  Or per week in Europe as a whole?

One more ,and important ,thing .

The 82% drop refers to the full first week of the PS3 in UK ,not to only the first two days that we know it sold 165K .So the numbers could be higher than what we are pondering here .

This is a very good point.  Depending on when the "second week" starts, 4-5 days of the "second week" were part of the first real week of release.  Next week will be a better indicator of the long term sales of PS3.
