Forums - Gaming - Gabe Newell: Next Half-Life won't change Gordon Freeman

Valve boss Gabe Newell has baulked at the idea of changing Half-Life's Gordon Freeman to bring him in line with the protagonists of more modern FPS titles.

With Half-Life: Episode 3 - or even Half-Life 3 - potentially on the horizon, fans are keen to know how Valve will evolve the series.

However, Newell has gone on record to say he wants Freeman to largely remain an arm and a crowbar - and he's not in any rush to get him talking, either.

When Edge asked Newell if he wanted to give Freeman a greater sense of 'embodiment', he said:

"We haven't had a reason to change that. Most of what I've seen to date has been gimmicky and is entertaining for just a minute or so."

When asked if he'd consider giving Freeman a voice (he's been mute in every Half-Life so far) - he added:

"We're not philosophically opposed to this, but we don't have any good reasons to do it. Right now making your companions more interesting and compelling seems a more fruitful avenue to explore."

Would any of you lot change Gordon Freeman? Has he become outdated?

What do you guys think has Gordon Freeman become outdated? I think he should talk more it makes the game better for the player?

I like him just the way he is!

Tease.

If Link doesn't talk and Zelda games still kick ass, I see no reason Gordon Freeman needs to talk either. Besides, Half-Life is kick ass with it's silent protagonist.

Gordon Freeman is an icon, not a character that you relate to, so the only way for him to become outdated is if HL becomes outdated.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

a hero need not speak. when he is gone, the world will speak for him.

"Its like sex, but with a winner!"

I like it. This is great news, i loved hl and hl2, they both broke ground in the fps fields, i would love the opportunity to play a 3rd half-life... this would definitely be one of my most anticipated games if it was announced.

Gordon is fine the way he is.

I'd rather see Valve keep on improving the world and other characters and not have Gordon get a voice, a mowhawk, and have his name changed to a household hand cleaning object.

Doesn't need to speak, just see how Valve continues the story.
Need more freeman!

                                       That's Gordon Freeman in "Real-Life"

Will be outdated crud then.

lol, no, its Half-Life and made by Valve. Not a modern FPS, made by UbiSoft or Activision.
