Hey, that's a good idea, a Devil Summoner on the PS3 would be great too.

The Wii is superior at moving Nintendo games, we were talking about 3rd party and frankly, The Wii wish it had the PSP support. In fact, The PS3 while it doesnt sell nearly as well as the Wii still get as many third if not more than the Wii. |
Funny enough, I would say DS was likely the chief stumbling block to Wii getting better Japanese 3rd party support. It pretty much became the new PS2, while Wii (despite selling at better than PS2 figures early on) had to settle for scattered leftovers. You can't get real market leader style support when there's already a record breaking market leader in place.
For one, I think most of those DS Square Enix RPGs would've been on PS2 (FFIII, FFXIIRW, etc), then transitioned Wii (FFCC, DQIX, SaGa2, etc). Level-5 likely would've gone straight to Wii with Layton, Inazuma, etc. Konami, Namco Bandai, Capcom, Sega, etc, likely would've thrown more support Wii's way earlier. And with increased support upfront from the large publishers and brands, we'd have seen increased support from mid tier and small publishers and brands, and a much healthier ecosystem for software sales sooner. This is how it worked on Famicom and PlayStation, and with DS out of the picture it's likely how it would've worked out for Wii...

The jury is still very much out on how well quality third-party games in general, and third-party RPGs in particular, can sell on the system in the various markets. Here's what we know: No quality third-party RPGs have been released for the Wii in the west. Only one quality third-party RPG has been released for the Wii in Japan: Monster Hunter Tri. Its performance has been respectable in the absolute sense, but very lackluster compared to the performance of its PSP prequel. This can't be a very encouraging sign for Atlus vis à vis the potential sales of a Wii version of Persona 5. Compare to the impressive sales of the hyper-niche Demon's Souls on the PS3 in the US, and of the PSP re-releases of the PS2 Personas in Japan. A PSP Persona 5 is almost guaranteed to sell well, and a PS3 Persona 5 probably would sell well enough to make a profit (especially when you factor the fat exclusivity check Sony would cut Atlus into the bargain). A Wii P5 might sell OK. It might also sell next to nothing, at the cost of development money and Sony exclusivity money. Atlus is a fairly conservative company: my instinct is that they'll wait and see how games like Monster Hunter Tri and The Last Story do on the Wii before taking the plunge. |
I don't think a Wii Persona is at all likely, but there's a few things to consider...
1) Atlus has had some notable success on the platform, with Trauma Center: Second Opinion being Atlus USA's 3rd best selling title ever (only behind Persona 4 and Demon's Souls).
2) Atlus R&D1 has experience, resources and tools in place on Wii from the 3 Trauma series games. They've actually done more original Wii titles than PSP titles so far even.
3) Wii's also had Dragon Quest Swords, Monster Hunter G and the Tales of Symphonia spinoff move decent figures in Japan. DQS in fact has outsold all the PSP SMT games combined. MHG outsold the PS2 original, which is rather impressive for a 4 year old, full priced game that doesn't even work with the Wiimote.
4) Atlus likely doesn't have huge thresholds for success anyway. They highlighted SMT Strange Journey as a positive result in their last IR, and that game only sold ~130k after a series of stock/shipment issues.
5) Kaneko said they were doing a Wii SMT game 2 years ago. We've heard nothing since, and who knows what might've happened, but I don't think we can rule out Atlus looking at the platform entirely.
Going back to the original news, apart from announcing the next Persona in a Playstation magazine, Hashino is also getting a column there. In the light of that it doesn't seem likely for the game to be on a non-Sony platform.

The Wii has healthy sales in all markets, thus it can potentially sell Persona 5 in all three. You're not getting the point though. Putting the game on the PS3 limits it to the PS3. It'll be the only platform to have it, or maybe it'll be shared with the 360 for an extra bit of sales. Putting it on the Wii/PSP/PS2 gives it the following advantages:
1. Reusing assets from previous Personas and having lower development costs going in than an HD Persona would have.
2. It would be featured on the two platforms Persona has been known for the last 5 years, the PSP and PS2. The Wii is merely added in because of the ease to port between PS2, PSP and the Wii.
3. It opens it up to both the handheld and console market, and it allows the series to grow into a new platform from this generation without much risk of tanking or having to rework the game to accommodate more expensive art, as the PSP and PS2 can ease it by showing strong sales in their own markets that they flourish in.
So this option gives the series security, allows for a less expensive title to be produced even while on three platforms, and opens it up to a new audience. I'm not saying this is what Atlus will do, but it would be the smartest choice they could make.
Another reason that it would most likely be on PS3 is because inal Fantasy XIII sold roughly twice as well as MH3 in Japan.
And the PS3 seems to be the console that is getting the most pr and love from Japanese gamers and media these days.
The PS3 has become the 360 of Japan, so it's going to be getting the most love.

It does seem incredibly smart, though I don't think it will happen... if only because it hasn't been done with other similar franchises.

Apples and oranges. DQX is going to sell roughly double what FFXIII did in Japan as well.

Or SMT: Nocturne 2.
OT: Im thinking PSP for Personas. Im wondering if they will port DDS 1/2 over to the PSP as well.
Either way, I want an HD Persona eventually (not just Persona, any SMT game)

DQX has always been a more family friendly type series than Final Fantasy, so it should be expected that it will sell more on Wii. However, no Persona game has ever had the type of sales that MH3, DQ, or FF have had. Also, Persona is more of a mature audience type of game than DQ. Mature audience games like FF, MGS 4, the Yakuza series, Valkyria Chronicles, have shown that they can sell in the same type of numbers on PS3 that Persona has sold in the past on Playstation consoles.
Almost all of the mature audience games on Wii have sold less than the ones on PS3.
