NINTENDO'S Wii has set a new record for the fastest console to sell 200,000 units, according to gaming analyst Gfk.

It achieved the feat in just 50 weeks, compared with 55 weeks for the previous record holder Sony’s PlayStation 2 (PS2).

Nintendo’s handheld unit, the DS, also took 55 weeks to sell that amount.

However, the PS2 and the DS remain Australia’s highest-selling gaming systems, recording over 2 million and 750,000 units respectively.

Last week Sony said the PlayStation 3 had sold more than 100,000 units, and achieved this feat faster than the PS2.

The Wii also has the record for the fastest to reach 100,000 units, a title it took from Microsoft’s Xbox 360 earlier this year.

The Xbox 360 broke the 200,000 mark in the third quarter of this year, after going on sale in March 2006.

The milestone for the Wii comes as it is about to celebrate its one year anniversary in Australia.

Last official figures from Australia were for Q3 which put Wii at 167,899, so Wii has sold 32,101 consoles over the last 7 weeks, or 4,586/week. PS3 was on 82,261, so sold 17,739 the five weeks after Q3, or 3,548/week. 360 was on 222,136, so maybe they'll announce hitting 250K soon.

Don't know about 100k but if 360 passed 200k in q3 07 and it debuted there in march 06 then it passed it sometime after week 65 and before week 78.

Probably around week 70

It has already outsold Gamecube in Australia, that's insane

360 passes 250K.

That's 27,864 in 8 weeks, or 3,483/week, which is similar to the PS3 weekly average for the first 5 weeks of Q4, and around 3/4 of Wii weekly average sales for the first 7 weeks of Q4.

Gamecube was a HUGE flop here. The Wii actually has a lot of support, and is forcing companies to re-include Nintendo products (i.e. video stores never used to rent out Ninty games - GC titles got dropped pretty quickly).

Some other general observations:

- based on retail catalogs, many stores aren't advertising the PS3 at all. I think the price is still out of range, and its a "next-year" product. Some also skip the 360.

- my local EB (Camberwell) recently reshuffled their shelves. The Wii + DS now occupy the front half the store (on one side), with the 360/PS3 on the other. The PS3 has a pretty small display area - the Wii is more than double the size. The PSP has now been moved to the back, to make more space for DS/Wii.

- PS2 still selling real sell, based on the amount of CHEAP software out. Traded in titles are available for $15-$20 (3 for $50, etc..) - same applies to the XBOX. I'd be surprised if they were selling ANY/much NEW software for the PS2 (just all 2nd-hand titles).

We are also getting a HUGE amount of Wii + DS advertising on TV - I see a Wii ad almost everyday now, and it has become common to see both.

PS3 ads less common, but they still show. Saw the awful "Magician" ad last night (errgh!).

Never, ever, ever see 360 ads - MS seem to go for fixed-billboard advertising more (and on trams, etc..).

Some more figures:

Sony:

PS2 sold 12,000 last week, and 9,000 the previous week.
PS3 selling 4,000 - 5,000/week.
PS3 currently "closing the gap with Xbox 360 every week".

Microsoft:

360 sold 275,000 units in Australia and New Zealand (which gives us 25,000 for NZ as 360 hit 250,000 in AU last week)
"Arcade and Elite versions each accounting for 20 per cernt of these.

40 or 45 per cent of revenue occurs during the Christmas period.

*Even though LTDs are given for PS2, PS3, and Wii in Australia + New Zealand, the figures are just the same as GfK's Australian figures, which would result in zero being sold in NZ, so I think this is a mistake, and those LTDs are for Australia only.
