Forums - Sony - PS3 hard drive/blinking red light issue help

I have a serious issue with my PS3 that just came up and I was wondering if anyone had some advice.

On Wednesday I upgraded my PS3 hard drive from my old 40 gig to a new WD 320 gig. After I completed the backup, restore, and installation of the new hard drive I turned on the PS3 and everything appeared to work fine. I put in a movie and after two minutes the PS3 shut off and started blinking a red light. Tried again and it did the same thing. I left the PS3 alone and went to do some other things. Then last night I was playing GTA IV for about 5 minutes when it did the exact same thing. I immediately thought the issue was related to the hard drive since it started when I replaced it so I put in my old 40 gig hard drive and  tried again. After 5 minutes of playing the same issue occured.

Does anyone have any idea what might be happening and how I can fix it. Im pretty sure I upgraded the hard drive correctly and don't understand why it would start doing this immediately after the upgrade.

Sounds buggered mate, I suggest you keep your old Hard Drive nice and safe, call customer support, if you are within warrenty then all fine and good, if not you may have to pay £120 for a new on (If they can't fix it).

You can keep all your save games because it sounds like your Hard Drive is fine ;)

-When mine went it was the Hard Drive and the Blu Ray Drive at the same time, on Christmas day no less!

I just went through this about 3 weeks ago. Your ps3 is basically dead. Its overheating, so it shuts itself off to protect it self. I had to send mine in and they totally swapped it out.

Not sure but sounds like YLOD, its one of these ironic things it just so happened when you swiped the Harddrive, I don't know for sure, I have a original fat 40 gig, from 2007, that I have had no problems with, and it gets used 4-8 hours a day by me and my son, plays all my DVDs and Bluray movies.I have been thinking for some time now mine is going to die, because of all the hard core use, and I have been so close many times in replacing the harddrive to a larger one also, now I am trying to decide weather to just buy a new slim, or go ahead and replace the harddrive on my fat., if you can ounce you have found out what is going on, let me know.

Its not nessesarly the ylod, because its not going amber. Its started to overheat so the system shuts itself off to protect itself. If at all possible back up you data and call sony.

Luckily I do have everything backed up so if I need to replace the system I won't lose anything.
The PS3 has been getting a lot of use between blu-rays, netflix, and games, but I never thought it could be overheating since its in a well ventilated area and I wipe of the dust from time to time. I still just find it to be a damning coincidence that this happened immediately after I upgraded the hard-drive. It just makes me feel that I did something wrong.

Lol ya I know what you mean. I had mine in an extremely well ventalated area, but it still went. The thing that sucked for me was I backed up the HDD and then my PS3 seemed to start working again for about a month. The same week I decide that I dont need the Back up data anymore and delete it was the same week it totatlly broke. I lost about $50.00 worth of movies and tv shows.
