Considering the margin of error, that would make them about even. But even with that, it's impressive for the PS3 considering the user base difference and demographics differences between the two consoles. Not to mention that more PS3 fans are buying software so this trend will likely continue in some cases.

The demographics aren't that different. Shooters are some of the best selling titles on both consoles. Also, the gap isn't big enough for Xbox 360 to dominate the PS3. I mean this isn't PS2 vs original Xbox.

I don't think PS3 fans are necessarily buying more software. There has just been a huge influx of new PS3 owners and they are purchasing games.

The demographics are different enough. Sony fans don't buy software like Xbox fans do - A. They don't buy shooters at the level of Xbox fans - B. Considering how the 1st Modern Warfare performed on the PS3 in conjunction with the 360, this is a good result for it. Is it a sign of tides changing, in this genre probably not. The 360 fanbase is more shooter heavy. It IS a sign, however, that multiplatform titles may be closer and closer in resluts as more PS3s are purchased.

As for your last sentence, that's exactly what I'm talking about. These results are showing as more PS3s fly off shelves, the more it's fanbase is buying software.

Uhhh... no. The demographics are pretty similar on the HD consoles. A game that's a hit on one is USUALLY a hit on the other. Often a game will perform better on one console, but its rare that a game is a hit on one console and a bomb on the other.

Again, similar doesn't mean the same, and sales show that. PlayStation and Xbox fans have different tastes, even if, yes, there are similarities.

And yes, a hit usually does perform good on multiple consoles. I didn't dispute that.

No shit, that's why I said "similar" and not "same."

If games are generally a hit on both or a bomb on both, that tells me they have pretty similar taste. I never implied sales are equal.

You're implying though that the demographics of the two are similar enough to where they're basically indinstiguishable, otherwise you wouldn't have quoted me.

If you take out Japan, they are extremely close.  The console total / game totals (without Japan numbers) would probably be very similar.

Lets see... I said, "The demographics aren't that different. Shooters are some of the best selling titles on both consoles."

How did you come up with the conclusion that I was saying, "they're basically indinstiguishable."

CGI said more PS3 fans are buying software, not that PS3 fans are buying more software.  Which is consistent with the line you countered with about the influx of new owners purchasing games.  Not that I think that's the whole story, because it's not like PS3 is selling THAT many more consoles each week to account for the PS3's amazing software sales of the recent past...that's also due to the continuous software releases of late, so yes, it's *also* true that PS3 fans are just buying more software.

That small of a gap for MW2 fits into the margin of error. 360 version is still probably selling more (may have just had an off week).

I believe the gap has been similarly small in a number of recent weeks for a number of recent games, but in 360's favor.  In that case those results were all equally suspect.  And it's happening while PS3's install base is 5.5 million lower while achieving these results on older games; for total PS3/360 SW sales, which take account of the big new PS3 releases, it's pure lopsidedness.

This is starting to get ridiculous.....do we really need a new thread for every game every week that outsells its 360 counterparts? Maybe its just me but this is starting to get out of hand. I didn't mind the first couple but it seems like this is just overkill.

Fair enough, but I really don't care about the part of the discussion you focused on.

We were more so discussing "taste." I still say Xbox 360 and PS3 owners have mostly similar taste even though they both have an edge in certain genres. However, CGI seems to think I said they have the exact same taste.

I think this discussion is over.

this is impressive that it outsold the 360 verion for the week but i will not be amazed until it outsells 360 worldwide only then would it be nice

Whoever owns a PS3 in the US, go buy God of War III on March 16,2010

God of War III will be the 2010 Game of the Year.

@ Loud_Hot_White_Box

Thank you. And let's see.....

Modern Warfare 2
PS3 in US - 3.88
360 in US - 6.94

Now, not only is the total America hardware difference large, the difference in numbers for the two versions of MW2 is fairly large as well. One could draw the conclusion that the user base difference is the reason, the demographics, or both.

Considering that, the PS3 outperforming (or with the margin of error, matching) the 360 the way that it has this past week means one of a few things:

A. The PS3 has better legs (again coming back to demographics & sales trends. Shooters sell faster and more on the 360).

B. As more PS3s are sold, that's one of the games those fans are buying now since they could pick up a game with the system.

C. Because the PS3 has been selling as much as it's been selling in the last few weeks, the numbers favor it more because MW2 is still a big seller regardless of the platform.

The conclusions one could draw from that.

Or D. MW2 copies were being sold at a highly discounted price for Game Day at Gamestop recently.

Ok, so when the 360 version is outselling the PS3 version with 5.000 (10.000 copies maximum) every week besides this, this also fits into the margin of error? That way we can tell that the PS3 version is actually outselling the 360 version every week.

PS3 userbase is 5.5 million lower than the 360 and recently it's been taking a huge shit on the 360 in software. I think that is impressive, just like the MW2 sales is impressive. I bet none of the 360 boys expected MW2 PS3 to sell on par or even outsell the 360 version in March 2010. Especially when you think of all the quality games (exclusives) that has been released on the PS3 lately, compared to the opposition.

April fools is over now =)

Not really big news, the bigger news is that the PS3 is finally getting on its feet, I predict it MAY have a higher chance compared to the 360 of competing with the wii
