Forums - Sony - Can Sony create a new franchise as big as Gran Turismo?

Sony's biggest franchise by far is of course Gran Turismo which sold 55.45 million units and every full game release have sold at least 10 million units

They've also got other big franchises like Ratchet & Clank which sold 25 million units and SingStar that sold 20 million units but both those franchises has had alot of releases unlike Gran Turismo

Sony have a lot critically acclaimed franchises and IP's such as God of War, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet but none seem to have the same level of sales as Gran Turismo

Do you think they can create another billion dollar franchise? it seems those franchises are created completely by luck

I don't think anyone could have dreamed Gran Turismo would sell the way it sells and it reminds me of Modern Warfare just because Infinity Ward have told Activision that they want to create a modern day shooter, but Activision almost passed on it and could have missed it

They have some talented 1st party developers - I don't see why not.

Yes they will definitely have another one eventually. They come up with too many good new IP's not to.

yeah but they got some of them for over 10 years and still not soo big like GT...i mean Uncharted,God Of War,Heavy Rain are some of the best games but dont sell big like that and that was the case the last 2 generations too except FF VII who sold amazing...

Hard to say really, maybe a move game? Only time will tell. I think it has to be the right type of game. And the right type of game this gen is a shooter with great multiplayer (please don't say kz2, and tell me how much you loved it).

they have the potential, but personally, i like it better if they make another collaboration game like demon's soul.

If they wouldnt be dumb (but we all know they are) they would bundle LBP with every PS3 sold and call Modnation Racers sackboy racers or something similiar to make the lbp franchise bigger (like nintendo did way back with mario) then, in 3 or 4 years or so, they would have one hell of a big franchise appealing to everyone like gran turismo, but they arent really smart IMO

It's vice-versa. First they need to make "one hell of a game appealing to everyone" just like Mario then in 3 or 4 years they'd have "one hell of a franchise appealing to everyone".

its probably not going to happen. GT became a huge franchise during the original playstation days and that is why it is still huge, it just goes hand and hand with playstation unlike any other game. Same with halo and xbox, and nintendo and mario, although "wii" titles are big with the wii, playstation doesn't have the huge casual crowd that will just buy into getting a title because it has the system name in it or has an added perpherial, nor does it have a large enough install base for new ips to sell really, really well. Only way a sony exclusive could become as big is if it is an initial release of a new sony console that ends up becoming the leader of the industry again if that ever happens.

Once Crash Bandicoot was a Sony exclusive franchise, and in that time it was bigger than GT. Uncharted may don't have a monster seller game, but may end selling 10 million copies at PS3 with a UC 3, and UC+UC2+UC3>GT5 is pretty possible. UC may be bigger than GT at PS3 if GT5 is the only one this gen.
