No need for probably, the PS2 IS the 2nd biggest selling console in the last 12 months. I wonder if it will be the 2nd biggest in the NEXT 12 months. I wouldnt be suprised.

Is it really? I don't think there's a single week this year that the PS2 has beat the Wii, and out of the five random weeks I checked from the charts, the Wii sold more in all but one or two of them.

If the wii is a success in china and korea, then i think so, otherwise Im not so sure, the already mentioned unreliabilty of the PS2 has been a boon for sales.

A lot of PS2 owners I know with a PS2 has bought a second one and I personally have owned about 15 broken ones (used for repairs), as well as 3 working machines (V1 jap import, V9 and a slim)

Yes, only to be outsold by the number one selling console, namely the Wii...

If you look at the first year of sales of PS2 vs. Wii you will see the Wii is ahead in America.

Other aras, the Wii is at least doing as well as the PS2 did in it's first year.  Keep in mind, these numbers are artificially low because of supply problems.  Nintendo will not have supply problems forever.  We still don't know what the Wii can really sell in America without supply problems.

It may beat it in hardware sold but it isnt gunna sell more software then the PS2. It doesnt look like there are many games being sold for the Wii beside Wii Sports and Wii play (which one comes with the package and the other comes with a free controller). Hell look at Mario Galaxy which is suppost to be Wii's biggest game this year. It dropped like a rock in the chartz compaired to other mario games.

The Wii can sell hardware which is good for Nintendo but it cant sell software which is bad for 3rd party. The only Software that ever sells on Nintendo's hardware are first party games. There are rare times when 3rd party sells a lot but it hasnt happened yet.

If that were true (which it's obviously not) why does the Wii already have more 1 million seller games compared to both the Xbox and PS3 during the same amount of time.  Your logic is flawed.  Attach rate may be lower, but software sales are higher.

I think the Wii is at a slight disadvantage when trying to match up to the sales of the PS2, on two counts

Redesign features and resiliency of the console.

I can't say I experienced first hand, but I've heard that the PS2 broke down fairly frequently at one point. I've never heard of any nintendo product having that trouble, so while some people may have bought a second or 3rd system to replace a broken one, I don't see this happening for teh Wii too frequently. (yes, I realize this probably isn't THAT massive of a change in units sold, but it probably accounted for quite a few)

Also, teh PS2 was redesigned about 3 or 4 different times. It started out pretty big and clunky and slimmed down considerably in terms of size and price. I think this probably accounted for a numerous number of 2nd or 3rd consoles being bought, many of these probably overlap the ones bought because of a console breaking down though)

I don't see what Nintendo can really do to redesign the Wii other than to start introducing the colored systems. Unless they add DVD playability, but from what I hear, that can be done via a firmware update, once nintendo gets the rights to use the codecs, so no need to redesign the console. Still, the different colors have been much clamored for, and may actually push a number of second units to people.

It would be nice if we could actually figure out what the specific userbase was for all teh systems though.

I thought about this awhile ago as well (the size of the Wii VS. the PS2).  I believe the Wii can be made smaller pretty easily. You can drop the Wii to about 1/3 it's size over the years if Nintendo wanted to.  Nintendo could drop the Cube support at somepoint, allow cube games for download and playable with the VC controller for instance and save a ton of space.  I don't think this would anger people as much if they did this in say 3 years.   There is a lot of wiggle room inside the Wii to cut down on it's size.  So it's totally doable.

hmm, thats tough. Can we stay this strong for 5 years, just dominating?? i mean when PS3 has a very good price tag, i think it will ultimately stop this dominance. Still i 3xpect a minimum of 80 million which would be fantastic for nintendo!

I say nah. I  think Wii will reach somewhere within 70-110 million.

I think the PS2 sales are about 120 million - 130 million after about 7 years...I'm pretty sure the Wii will pass that amount by about.... 2010-2011...and then it will go on to sell 300 MILLION UNITS- 500 MILLION UNITS LIFETIME....i think johnlucas's prediction is very close...

So what do you think???

EDIT: PRETEND THE TITLE SAYS "WHEN WILL THE WII BREAK PS2'S WW SALES RECORD"

i dont think it will sell 300-500 million but if wii fit becomes another wii sports then i think it will reach 200-million

Unless the Wii wins over Japan, which is unlikely due to their handheld obsession, no.
