Firmware 3.21 has just gone live, removing the ability to install Linux on the PS3.  However, according to the Japanese PlayStation site, it does a couple of other things too, stuff that nobody’s mentioned before.  Don’t get too excited, though, it’s not background downloading, cross-game chat or PS2 playback.  Yet.

So, what’s that all about?  Well, firstly it appears that the quality of of PlayStation format software from the Store has been improved, presumably referring to the PS1 functionality (FFIX?).  Secondly, it appears that the security of MP4 video playback has been boosted too, removing some vulnerabilities.

Told you it wasn’t that exciting.  Wonder if there was some hole in the MP4 playback, though…

Background download is already there.

i want background updating, or atleast turn off automatically after update finishes countless times did the update stoped / error'd without me noticing it because i was asleep

If you're asleep how is the PS3 going to tell you there was an error?

I guess it could make the screen give out a high pitch scream, but that would just get annoying.

lol well when i download in the background it doesn't get errors and even if it did it still shut down

Still waiting for one of the HD twins to support H.264 and soft subtitles. They support MP4 and soft subs are an official part of the MP4 format but neither of them support it.

Soft subs are often used in pirated anime and foreign films, Sony is a motion picture company so, unless they wanna lose even more money, it, along with MKV and FLAC support, aint gonna happen.

I'd like some background data copying as well. Whenever I copy anything to the ps3 it engulfs the screen for several minutes. It can't take that much CPU or USB power to copy data.
