Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo 23% of GameStop's non-used business

this may be of interest for those wondering about used game sales.

http://blog.videogamepricecharts.com/2010/01/2009-game-publisher-resale-value-report.html

of note, Wii games have the best resale value. This may lead to more new purchases in the long run (someone sees a used game with a high price and decides new is better than used type thing)

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Hm... this feels like it should be surprising... considering Wii's are cheaper... despite their huge sales and that Nintendo games never drop in price, I'd think the used versions of Nintendo games would be flying off the shelves.

Then again maybe few people trade in their Nintendo games.

What would the Wii's price have to do with whether people buy games new or used?

50 bucks is a lot for a new game.  I would expect them to sell more Used copies of a game that's $50 new 6 months later then a wii game that's $30 new 6th months later.

I've always thought that Nintendo sales were higher outside of gamestops because of this.

You wrote "Wii's are cheaper", not "Wii games are cheaper". But even then, retail price does not relate to resale price. Any look at the variety of prices for games that sold at the same price should tell you that.

Well that's kinda my dual point.

Wii's are cheaper hence you need to sell more of them for more revnue.

And Nintendo games i'd expect to be caniblized by used sales more then other games.  Including other Wii games that drop in price.

Like I said, just what I thought.  Doesn't actually mean I was right.

1. Revenue is not what matters unless it's to puff up a portfolio. Profit matters, and selling systems at a profit will always make more money.

2. In order for there to be loads of used games being bought, there have to be loads of new games being resold. Some of the most commonly resold games are those with huge openings and then quick drops afterwards. This shows that some game sell due to hype and are then resold. Since this is more an HD phenomenon, logically they should have the most resales, and that is the case.

1. They are talking about 23% of purchases though.  I'm assuming the Wii costs less for them to buy then the 360 or PS3.  So I mean you'd have to sell a lot more, to buy a lot more for it to show up on the sheet.  I just put it a stupid way.

2. Fair enough.

It's funny how Nintendo changed the industry. 5 years ago when I went to Gamestop, it use to be nothing but teen boys and young men buying games. Now that the Wii is here, I see kids, teen girls and parents buying games every time I go to Gamestop.

you must have been living under a rock, or just incredibly unlucky because kids and teen girls have always been buying video games.. ever since playstation. When gaming went from being a NERD thing, to a normal hobby.

pre NES..... Tech geeks

pre PS1..... Nerdy boys

pre Wii/DS.. Kids and young males

now ......... errm, I am trying to think of a demographic that hasn't really caught onto console gaming, despite what many think, mums and grandparents etc are still a tiny minority even on the DS (and the Wii is way behind the DS) but I suppose that they are now statistically relevant unlike before.

Women make up half the DS audience at least.  That's a pretty gigantic shift from Famicom, Game Boy or PlayStation.

Females maybe, but people over 40 are still a pretty small chunk

Not that small actually...

Well those are the graphics I was thinking of.... the Wii one is a little suprising, more older people than i remember... however, on the DS in Japan, people over 40 still only look like about 1/4 of the total... but the actual population of Japan is probably almost even in numbers for over 40s versus under 40s. While in America it could be as low as 1/10th (and if I move ot to over 45s it lowers significantly)

I didn't think Wii was as balanced as that though, I must be thinking of the previous years graphs.

Since they are talking about game sales, not system sales, the price of a system is irrelevant.
