I'm sorry, I don't see anyone cheering Sony on. I see people saying Sony is in their legal right to take actions if the please... and they are. The people you say are cheering Sony are just the people who don't give a shit about a useless feature and aren't getting any of their rights trampled or taken away. Sorry to burst your guys bubble but it really is a very very very small minority making a stink about a very legal action. Get over it.

PS - Majority of the ones causing a stink dont even own a ps3. Let the owners worry about the company they are giving their money to. Which... it looks like they don't mind.

So then do I get license to not give a shit when they take away a feature you do care about? Last I checked consumers were on the same side. Of course corporate shilling does pay very well.

I wouldn't call it corporate shilling, more like head-up-assery mixed with complete and utter consumer ignorance compounded by millions syphoned into corporate marketing.

So it's official then? Not just that rumor feeling thing?

I hope they get slammed thoroughly, they really deserve it. You can't just remove features after people pay for them.

Yes it is official.

The irony I see too is that certain (not all) SOny fans seem to be cheering this despite 2 very important facts:

1. This kills the PS3 is a computer/supercomputer movement. Now it's a great game system and media player only. It doesn't do everything (that it could).

2. The PS3 was the seed for Cell developers. IBM cell boards cost upwards of $5,000 (US) which are now required just to learn how to program the cell for general use (non-gaming). Killing the market of Cell experienced developers is insanely retarded especially if there is to be a successor.

From what I can tell there is zero upside from this decision for Sony, the researchers who depend of them, or anybody else. Lose-lose-lose. Of course anybody who dealt with Linux development on the PS2 back in 2002 would have seen this coming from a mile away. It was a tax-dodging effort to get the PS2/PS3 classified as a general use computer to evade taxes.

1. Where was this movement? I'd like to sign up... oh wait... most people really only talked about the cell and completelt ignored that PS3 even had an OS...  just another person pulling shit outta his ass here. Oh no! Ps3 can't shoot lasers out of its disc drive and wipe out a country... guess we should sue for false advertisment as well! oh wait... many claimed when that tag line was used there would be a suit followed... nothing came out if it like nothing will come out of this

2. What? lol... okay then.

Wow how insulting.

First off the US ARMY and Navy both have massive PS3 clusters as well as DOZENS of other research clusters. ever heard of Folding@home- yeah prob. not. Also Sony has spent years pushing the platform for this very same purpose. So yeah buddy there is a movement for those of us with our heads not in the sand. Secondly as a potential developer would you rather buy a $300 PS3 or a $5,000 Cell blade server. Even a guy with with a moniker like yours can piece that together.

Both of which will be not be negativly effected.

Yes... I have... whats your point here?

rest of your post... you dont have a leg to stand on

Dude you need to relax.

A hundred bucks you don't even use Linux on your PS3, but whenever a news article comes out about the PS3 being hacked, you make a thread about it.

Sony can remove PSN this very second if they really wanted to, and there wouldn't be much you, I, or anyone else can do about it. And your post about someone taking it to court already? What a joke, he's going to lose, I can 100% guarantee it.

Like I said, looking at your post/thread history, chances are you don't care about Linux on the PS3, you just want to see the PS3 get hacked.

Maybe YOU should go read over the EULA and ToS again.

I don't think you were fering to me, but in the interest of transperency:

Totally honost- I don't own a PS3. But I did some development on PS2 Linux and have been eyeing the Cell for years. The parallel power of the chip really is amazing and unrivalled and this move hurts developers, which in turn hurts YOU the PS3 owner. Less reason to invest in Cell and higher cost of entry mean fewer and fewer people who can max the HW and prove what the PS3 can really do. You guys saw what the results of non-optimized code was for 2 years- dozens of crappy buggy multi-plats. Compare that to say the Cell masters at Naughty Dog and my point becomes crystal clear.

If any lawsuit is brought up Sony will win. Honestly its their product they can do as they see fit with it

While I think the legalities of this decision are debatable and likely to be country specific that is an insane stance to take on ownership. The PS3 you purchase is your own property, not that of Sony. Or do you think they can come collect it at any time without notice? Perhaps I missed the part where all property you buy is actually just licensed to you.

Tomorrow I will come by your house as a SONY representative to pick up your PS3. It seems I would have all the right in the world to do so.

Are you people ignoring the fact that you can run Linux on the PS3 even after the update? All it requires is permission to do so, that is all.

No YOU don't have a leg to stand on! See how random unsubstantiated statements are easy to type on a random online forum? If there are no legs to the chair perhaps you could enlighten us with the deep wisdom you gleaned from during your last Just Dance seminar?

lol you guys are a real hoot overreacting. Man this debacle has made it clear that problems that dont even concern people that have to deal with sony will be over exaggerated in every way and blown out of proportion. I thought it was just the media hype and spotlight that caused the KZ2 backlash but as I can now see no matter what people are going to bitch since this only effects a very small minority and less people will even know it was removed than who knew about KZ2.
