Forums - Nintendo - 'You’ll never beat Nintendo' by Joe Booth, Senor Producer for EA Montreal

This is the pdf of a MIGS(Montreal International Games Summit) presentation by Joe Booth, Senor Producer for EA Montreal. I'm posting it now because I have never seen it before. It is a very nice read.

Wow, this is really good. I like to think that this guy totally gets it.

Just read this on Malstrom's blog. I would hope that this would signify at least some change.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

Well I say that I think he gets it

But you never really know.

I like how he's looking at the idea of making a FIFA game that is 1. awesome and 2. able to be played on pretty much any modern computer.

EA Montreal Nintendo Group

Pitched early 2008

– Nintendo over indexing

– EA under indexing on Nintendo

– Montreal best place

Montreal best place Strategy

– Attract best people

– Leverage existing IP through rest of cycle

– Build world class teams for Wii 2

I wonder would this strategy translates into "world class" quality and eventually "world class" sales of EA games based on values Wii has to offer as opposed to so called "core" offerings, i.e. values Nintendo games with wide appeal tend to follow?

That caught my eye too. ANd honestly I think they are trying to convert more to Nintendo's audience already this year with NBA Jam. If it plays like the old ones it is arcade style simple and loads of fun. It will be interesting to see how they go about doing things next gen on Nintendo consoles.

This was from Nov 09 so we should see whether EA takes any notice over the next few years.

He pwned his own company with one of Malstrom's articles, that takes nuts.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
