freaking pathetic move from Sony. Can't say how disappointed I am.

What makes it so pathetic? What percentage of the human population will slit their wrists over this? What if it helps the PS3 by taking out the feature? What if this actually contributes to improving game performance? What if it's laying the foundation for some other useful feature?

All things to consider before calling it pathetic.

Don't spin this as being positive CGI, it isn't.  The other OS feature I'm pretty sure will have zero memory imprint once the PS3 has booted into its gaming configuration.  This is no foundation, its simply protecting their security.  I agree its perhaps wrong to lambast Sony for doing this but then again had they not come out less than a month ago and guaranteed they would not disable the feature perhaps they wouldn't have got so many people annoyed and opinionated.

There is too many people on this site defending Sony over this instead of just accepting what they're doing is wrong.  You don't promise one thing then deliver another.  What feature would it take for them to remove before you accept this constant removal of features is not acceptable?

Had Microsoft done this then I would have criticized them too, funnily enough like many people did when they were forced to upgrade to NXE from the blades dash.

Sony's not to blame for this, only 1 man, Geohot. So since you have so much anger about this then throw it at Geohot not Sony, there just protecting there console, there big money maker is the software without that they could be in trouble. It's ALL Geohot's fault.

This is kind of like if I opened a store and someone found out how to steal food from my store and told everyone then everyone started stealing more food from me. So then I figure out a way to make it impossible for them to steal food and then people get pissed off at me...makes no sense right?

I got two theories about this announcement. It could be an April fools joke but maybe Sony wants to see the reaction from everyone first to see if they should implement this, if they get a lot of negative reactions then they can just say it's an April fool joke.

Let's hope it's an April fools joke.

But if it is true, I'm not blaming some hacker for it. If this is really a desperate act to keep pirating off PS3, then Sony needs to guess again, and think of another method, cause either way their console will be hacked sooner or later. I'm sure MS and Nintendo could also take EXTREME measures right now to ensure that their consoles can no longer be hacked. But it's better not to take features out. What Sony is doing is like taking backwards compatibility out of all older consoles just because they are vulnurable...I just hate when a company gives me a feature, I start using it and get accustom to it, then they remove it. Kinda like how Facebook takes a 360 turn every couple of months and everybody gets pissed.

I like the way MS does it. They ban people from Live for having a modded console, makes perfect sense. To me what Sony is doing is like MS saying they are going to remove Live from all consoles made before a certain date.

Wow so many ignorant people.
You think if Nintendo could close up their security flaws by taking away 1 feature that .01% of their customers use they wouldnt? You think if microsoft could do the same to fix their crappy security on their DVDROMs they wouldnt do it as well? get real.

Bullshit. Someone could develop a program for linux that would clone PS3's and it would still be Sony's fault for removing it. This isn't closing an exploit. It's removing an enire feature. Your food store analogy is just ridiculiously wrong.

How is it spin when I didn't give an opinion of my own? Like you, I don't fully know why they would take out the feature, but fear of hackers, I'd imagine, is the reason.

If that's the case, how is this a bad thing? Why the Hell would they want someone stealing shit from them. You say that they're protecting their security. Why the Hell wouldn't/shouldn't they?

Can you actually sit there and try to tell me that a whole nation of people will be upset over this? The majority of PS3 owners probably don't even know that the feature is there, or how to use it.

Why don't you take a shot at the hackers that are fucking shit up. Don't freaking get on my case for asking questions.

Why don't you calm down as you've so kindly said to me in the past.

The point stands some people want this feature, they were told it was not going to be removed, it is now going to be.  No matter the reason, its terrible customer service and people have a right to criticize them. Note I said criticize, not hate or fling childish insults.

Just so we're on the same page, the hack that makes use of this feature does absolutely nothing other than open dorrways to other angles of attack, its useless from a pirating perspective and has limited usefulllness for homebrew and the PS3 scene is so dead it probably never will be anymore than that either.  I never quoted any amount of users who would be upset by this, it doesn't matter if you upset 1% of people or 100% its still bad.

What I find ironic, they can't win for losing. First it was: "why should I pay $600 for features I won't need/use"? Now it's: "Oh, they keep taking out features, why should I even buy a PS3 now"?

Had this been a feature that was useful, such as the PS2 BC, I would understand the ranting, though I can pretty much guess and understand the other side of it as well. But with internet security constantly in question, if they're trying to protect their goods, I don't give a damn what was said 1 month, 2 months, 3 months ago, I'm not against that, nor am I against it if it's allowing for better use of other functions within the system, which is a possiblity as well.

@ But that's the thing. They aren't taking it out to make it cheaper. They're taking it out of consoles that have already been released. People that have already paid for the feature.

I'm sure some people found it useful. To remove this for internet saftey is like disabling your computers ability to download to protect your computer from viruses. Saftey issues of non standard OS are the responsibility of the consumer. If some guy wants to put Linux on his PS3 and run the risk of saftey problems it's non of Sony's buisness. If they're getting rid of it to improve or bring in new features... here is an idea. Don't remove it until those new features are ready to come in. Here is another idea... make it OPTIONAL and run two concurrent forms of firmware. It would be like Sony removing BC from older consoles. It's just the removal of features for no good reason with no ability for the consumer to win out.

And my point still stands, they can't win for losing. If they kept this feature, there'd be something else to bitch about.

As for telling you to calm down, you're usually angry about something. This is rare for me.

Or they could of just as eaisly put in a warning before you install the other OS that says "Sony isn't responsible for any security problems this may create and that's always a possibility." Simple and nothing to complain about, and what they SHOULD of did... and I can't really see how people could say otherwse.
